The sauna was an integral part of our lives from our first memories as a child. It was an outdoor sauna that has been situated about 30 yards behind the home and about 10 meters from the pond we existed on. It had been constructed of Northern bright plank and measured 12 feet by 10 feet in size. We were happy that people did not need the clay earth that a few of our neighbors had which may require a unique drain to remove excess water.
The key reason for having a separate outdoor sauna was because of convention but more importantly to cut back the fire hazard. More than one of our friend's sauna has burned down in the past 40 years. It is exciting that individuals all applied wood to heat our properties but apart from a chimney fire or two nothing of our buddies or neighbors houses burnt down.
