Physical Therapy: Six Weeks begin

I had my first PT session this afternoon. It involved a full body evaluation. I was evaluated for ability to bend over forward and back, side to side. I also was tested for strength in my arms and nerve function overall. My PT advisor ran his hands over my body; with my permission, of course. Some nerves fire indiscriminately, causing electric pain or tingling sensations. I have a nerve that fires painfully mid lumbar fusion. After I had heat pads over my upper and lower back, then a light massage. I was on my belly with my hands under my forehead and my right hand fell asleep. I had nerve pain down the left side of my neck as well. By the time I left I was in tears and my nose was dripping. Not lovely at all. My PT protocol involves swim therapy in their 90 degree F heated pool. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. I will have heat and massage as well, this time seated to prevent the pressure on my neck. I hope this post informs others of what happens at PT sessions. I know my case is personally biased. I intend to follow the full 6 weeks to see how I improve. I do expect to do better. Live with high expectations and persevere.

I have been through PT many times. I am able to distinguish between the pain that can be expected to gain use of muscle and get well and then the pain that is actually making me worse. Only we know our bodies and it is important to let the therapist know if a position or modality is affecting our body in a harmful way.

Sounds like you spoke up since you will get the massage in chair. Good for you.
