what i did right today....hmmm, well, did the pick up of the kittens for everyone.  woke at 6:30 called rn, as we were cut off last night by my phone battery running out of charge and called mike to make sure he was there.  NEVER REACHED HIM.  he was charging his phone in his car.  so instead of picking up at 7:00 a.m. when its  cold out, i reached him at 10 and picked up at 11.  not good, its already hot.  i drive a sedan, so it stays hot in the car...nothing i could do.

he showed me the pound's new format, which gives the animals, even pregnant moms a chance to give birth at the shelter, then the only danger is disease as shelters have so many animals in there that disease is inevitable.   (being pregnant used to be automatic death sentence for all animals brought to a shelter).  he seemed very anxious for the public to like their new format, i hope its as good as it appears it will be.  no way to tell until the format is around for a while and the numbers can be read.  glad a lot of pounds are relying on fostering like they are supposed to.  in order to have funding they are supposed to have a foster program, the former director had one set up but rarely used it, he believed in killing everything that walked through the door, SERIOUSLY.  unreal.  the new director is better than that.  this manager says the new format makes this shelter medium, instead of a slaughter house but its not a no kill.  (i still feel the only solution is a federal ONE DOLLAR tax nationwide and mandatory and free spay/neuter, california has all the numbers for this, where there will be a SHORTAGE of animals in ten years if the tax goes through and all the animals are spayed/neutered.  free vet care would be great as well, they have that in england, but in usa, i'll believe it when i see it.

he offered all the basics:   shots, dewormer, fixing and basic antibiotics.  i offer that too, with new fosters or their own medications or vet (their bill though), whatever works for THEM.   i was impressed with that, only ONE other person at that pound, with his job has offered that plan in the ten years we have been around as a professional rescue.  hope it works out.

he had me bring in my rescue paperwork again and they copied it again.  then he had to input all the info and it took over an hour, which is expected, paperwork takes time, and tested the mother cat for leuk/aids.  she is negative.  then he told me there was a big outbreak of panleukopenia (distemper, which is generally fatal and extremely contagious (mostly to kittens and older cats who have never been vaccinated), the only thing that kills that bacteria, in the air on on furniture etc., is chlorox.  and it can live 20 years).  so they are not allowing those foster homes to have animals for 60 days.  what a mess.

the other deal is that we don't advertise the animal for adoption until it is fixed, if it dies before it is fixed the dead body goes to them, and there is no connection between our rescue and their pound.  all fine with me.  i know that is because of liability, i take the animal, i become liable.  fine, fine, fine.

i took a white mom and her five day old baby.  k wants to adopt the white mom.  she is blue eyed, so my guess is she is deaf, but that is a long way down the road.  i didn't even know he was into white animals.  he says if he didn't have adonis, who is a flame point siamese, he would want her (he also just lost elisabeth recently), so my guess is, the white one already has a home.  if she is deaf, this will be a first for our rescue, we haven't done the deaf or blind animals yet.  the other four babies over there, his new handyman went crazy for and he took them out of clf's old bedroom (which looks nice by the way, i had no idea k re-did the room, but he did) and brought it to the garden house in the back.  so those kittens are living in the garden house with him (its very small).  he was all excited and started naming them (he is in the middle of a court battle to get custody of his 13 month old son, so having baby animals around is probably helpful.  lots of smiles).  they seem to be eating okay and its all set up.

allll the animals seemed super relieved to be in a house instead of a small cage in the pound.  can't say i blame them, and so much more space to roam and run and of course, the individual attention that they will never get in a shelter anywhere.  being a shelter volunteer should be mandatory, just like being a baby holder in hospitals for babies with no parent (or no parent who shows up) should also be mandatory community service and part of our culture.

dropped off rn's, which are smaller kittens weighing just over a pound.  her set up is beautiful.  she got rid of all her ordinary furniture and has mostly patio furniture which cleans easily, inside the house.  bryn built her two huge wooden cages for sequestered animals, like young kittens and she has it all outfitted with towels and bowls right in the living room.  very cool.  then dropped off the siamese kittens by me, who immediately went to playing with toys and seem pretty content.  two are wishlisted, so hopefully it will go well.  the wishlist woman adopted from us 3 years ago and is looking for a buddy for that animal.  no more dogs, because she just retired from nursing.  same as hln she will only be working ONE day in dialysis education somewhere.

she and her husband want to travel finally.  she is lucky they are both still alive to do that, really taking quite a chance to put off travelling to retirement, most people never get to travel at all if they wait until old age.  its best to travel in your teens and twenties, when you are young enough and spry enough to really get around and enjoy.  nowadays its cool because they have adventure travel for people who are very sporty and volunteer vacations where you kind of work when you travel and build things for third world countries.  haven't done any of that kind of stuff yet myself.  i always did ordinary package trips and sightseeing and later on study abroad.  there is an art one that i still want to do and there are many where you go see ruins through archeology departments, still lots to do out there.  there is a tour of china that is a bicycle tour and you follow a truck, if you get tired, your bicycle goes onto the truck and you ride on the back of the truck....so cool.

so, had drinks at k.  the problem with the new handyguy is he got into k's liquor (all his rum is gone and all the irish cream!  he's pissed, but he has had this happen with every single handy person he has hired (plus his brother and his nephew.  lol.)  its cool over there on sundays, because its bloody mary day, its amazing that the son of a minister, spends sunday afternoons drinking (however, the pastor i knew from an ex's church was a working drunk, he's come by to visit with a bottle of wine in hand, it was okay until he started drinking before 5:00 p.m., that's how you know a person is no longer a working drunk, if they drink before 5 or after 9 p.m.  i learned this in north florida from working drunks.  lol.

Hearing about all the shelter animals is cool. We adopted Angela (cat) from a shelter and I love her to death. She is the sweetest cat. Sometimes she\'s so loving it\'s a pain in the butt, but she can\'t help it. She just wants love, love love. It\'s nice to have her when I\'m down.
