I sent this to my mom. She puts out a basket with towels and a blanket for her outdoor cat.
1. Outline entrance with large plastic pot used for plants
2. Soften plastic with blow dryer
3. Cut out plastic circle that you just drew with a utility knife
4. Place styrofoam in the bottom of the larger bin
5. Place small bin into the larger bin (on styrofoam).
6. Outline inner entrance of smaller bin with a magic marker.
7. a. Soften plastic with blow dryer.
b. Cut out outline of smaller bin with a utility knife.
8. Fill with straw (loose straw is FREE at feed stores, its in the back of the store (whatever has fallen off the bales of straw or hay (the more you take the less they have to sweep up).
9. Cut the bottom of the the large black plastic pot
10. Use black plastic pot for an entrance tube - insert pot into the hole
11. Put small lid on the small bin and add more straw
12. Put top lid on larger bin and you are done!
(Entire project should take about 20 minutes -- so in reality: multiply the amount of time suggested by 3. It will take about an hour, unless you have experience doing this).
thank you larissa! i used to do the same thing - a wool blanket, i figured that must keep them warm, i even used an old down comforter....but blankets collect moisture, i never thought of that.
i have seen the tee-pees for animals and the lean-to\'s, both with hay, but never saw this before, this will keep them warm and DRY, its plastic. plus protected, hopefully. great idea!

I think you\'ve seen the shelter my hubby built for our outdoor cat, Fatboy! We\'ve tried to get him inside on the porch on freezing nights, but he won\'t come in. SO Bobby build a little cave out of the patio cushions and put a gooseneck lamp over the top of the cushions to keep it warm in there. Fatboy loves it. We\'ve found a few other cats in there from time to time.

If we did one, it would turn into an apartment complex for chipmunks! Little monsters --- they taunt the dogs and eat all of the chicken food!
