PHOTO: Formal place setting. This is what it was like at the resorts. Reading Jl's obit brings back early teen memories of formal "dress for dinner" at the resorts so all of the young teens would learn finishing.

at the resorts in the catskills, you are in a resorts "camp" when you are a kid. the kid side has a buffet of junky food for children like burgers, mac and cheese and spagetti, french fries ... and ONE adult special that the children can order. its very chaotic, there are counsellors and the kids from infant to 13 years are there every night. you get used to it and find your own way ...
At age 13 you eat in the main dining room with the other teenagers. wow! There are generally two tables, one for older teens and one for younger teens. the year i met jl, he was actually an older teen. However, he, hank, ira, j all left the older teen table to sit at the younger teen table because the girls at the older teen table were so evil. those girls were hank's older sister, the evil step and some other girls. the boys said all the older girls did was sit there making fun of everyone in the room and doing things like trying to trip the waiters and being demanding. (like on willy wonka, the rich bitch of "i want it now").
at our table everyone got along great and spent most of our time telling jokes and trading jokes from joke books, and trying to figure out the silverware. lol. evelyn finley was one of the people at our table along with most of the boys who should have been at the older teen table, but "switched their age" because the older girls were so nasty. hank said he knew right away how it would go (he's smart) and told the waiter he was 15, when he was really 16, ira who was 17 tried the older table very briefly, and then lied and said he was 14, jl was 17 and the waiters knew he was 17, but when they asked i think lying was a new thing for him, he was like 16? and the waiters at first wanted to make him sit over there and then hank was like he isn't, he's 15 and the waiters were like someone has to sit at the other table. someone's super young brother went over there, he was 13, and literally five minutes later, he was back with us as well. lmao. Even jl was laughing himself to tears. the waiter comes back and stares, counting heads again.
finally jl was like, have you TALKED to those girls? one of the waiters went over there and came back, rolled his eyes, nodded and life continued as it was for the rest of the week. we had a blast. the truth was jl was almost 18, i think both ira and hank were as well, but hank said every resort they go to, his sister is an asshole, he knew right away to just lie about his age and stay far away.
its raining outside. went to the spa briefly and the sauna isn't working. grrrrr. then had some leftover birthday ice cream cake. slept half the day, i guess because of the rain. still coughing, but not too bad.

I went to summer camp as a kid, but it was for the poor kids. I did have a blast, though. I just went once when we got a scholarship from the Salvation Army.
that\'s cool larissa, they have something like that at the christian camp, but the recipients only get $100 off of the tuition. one of the summer camps i attended as a kid had a sliding scale, and people definitely paid all different amounts. i had heard from one of the artist kids she paid $500 for the month. as far as i knew it was $200 per two weeks or $300 for the month. when people wrote in on price, i heard all different things, and then someone said if you refused to show your taxes, it was the top price. to be honest, if they aren\'t getting a discount, why should they show their taxes? if you are just writing a check, you shouldn\'t have to show anything.
