FAO Schwarz, NYC location, which closed July 2015 used to be the biggest toy store in the world. Began as Toy Bazaar in Phili in the 1860's.
Since NYC rent prices is what forced them to close, maybe they should re-open in Phili next to the Barnes and Noble Super-store - Phili rents are less than HALF of what NYC rent is. Can't believe FAO closed. The only toy store that let's you try-out their SIX FLOORS of toys! Toys R us owns FAO now and has "boutiques" of FAO inside all the Toys R us -- not the same thing at all.
having a lot of trouble posting - more than usual, though it seems a little better right now. its very cold outside today. 38 degrees at the minute and its night. my knee is hurting from it and so is my neck and shoulders etc. grrrr. was bear hunting on line which is how the fao thing came up. i love their truffles bear and get a new one every ten years. they wear out from use (and i wash them, which it says you shouldn't but its gross not to). also took a look at the steiff animals which are made of mohair so the large ones are very expensive - over $200. nicely made though. whenever i think of toys i think of the movie Big, part of which was filmed at FAO Schwarz in NYC.
very long day today. they had a run, chinese auction and pancake breakfast at church. i met with n to give him his check there and then met with a to get him out of a jam. strange day. looked at real estate for him, there is some where he wants to be because once its paid, he only has a lot rent and they have a pool and all that and good schools for his son. the nicer one i guess wouldn't work unless he has conventional financing and if that, then a house makes more sense when you get into real money loans.
went to lunch with j and they BURNED his sandwich, so we had to go back and request it be replaced. why in the world would they serve it like that (and wrong order too, they served it with onions instead of just lettuce and tomato) all strange. when we returned, they gave us pasta fazool (fagioli) soup to make up for it while we waited for the replacement sandwich,
Fagioli, akafazool(which is Neapolitan dialect for the standard Italian word for beans), is a peasant dish, just a simple soup ofpastaand beans and veggies with a tomato base that thickens from the pasta the longer it is kept in the fridge.
which was nice of him to offer. the guy cooking at early lunch time was the guy who opens and not the real cook. the real cook was there when we returned an hour later. i guess that is why it happened, but the opener-guy should have known not to serve burned food. ewww.
headed up north after all the drama. nice to be up here again, when its nice and quiet - i really miss those quiet weekends that we all took for granted for so many years. but since its cold outside, not much to do except put the heat on 81 or 83 and avoid the outdoors.
talked to p and mia, who is sort of p's former daughter-in-law, another one who the female is 11 years older than the guy (the guy is p's son). she likes her though. they had been together for 16 years, so odd that they broke up. she was in a car accident and is waiting for reduced housing for disabled people. almost was going to say to p, so she gets in a car wreck and then suddenly they break up after 16 years. scary. i didn't ask p yet. neither of them - p or mia, are driving right now. if mia is from nyc, its possible she doesn't drive at all. a LOT of people from nyc never bother to learn to drive because there is so much publictransportationthat cars are discouragedthere, san diego is like that as well, but way better weather. lol. in nyc, there arebusesand trains every five minutes ("the city that never sleeps" -- except when it snows -- all roadways in nyc were closed at 2:30 p.m. today and all flights cancelled because of the 25 inches of snow that is falling. they also had hurricane force winds in maryland and 30 inches of snow there) glad i'm not living in the northeast - its so cold and crowded and polluted up there.
started a book on travel clubs for people over the age of 50. i didn't even know stuff like that existed. its the same kind of things they have in volunteer vacations and college travel for younger people, but for older people who still have their health. they also mention peace corp eldest age to go is 85. never knew that. wild world out there. lol. and finished up daughters of memory, which takes you into the younger sister's breakdown as she recalls her terrible upbringing - i think what broke her is keeping in touch with the same people she despises and all the pretense of it. she should have just left and dropped it all. it reminded me of "i never promised you a rose garden" which is required reading nowadays in high school, which brings you into her downward spiral as well and how she got out of it. though that book it never tells you why she ended up like that. bipolar is genetic and a lot of mental illness is genetic.
