Pain Lournal June 2011

Did some work in the garden with my old friend the shovel.... wrong ... shovel is not my friend any more.  Left side of lower lumbar is really bad. Pain going into my bumm button (nerve in the butt) and down around my hip/leg joint then down top /outside/ and deep inside thigh/ to the knee/ then sort of disappears /then into the foot.  Sharp/hot/stabbing pain.... realized what I had done to it so I stopped .........but this is 3 days later after doing the shoveling..... Very very little shoveling too!  I hate my limitations I want a garden this year even if it is a very little one!!!!!! now just sitting here at computer for about 20 minutes my right foot is going numb right under the middle 3 toes and part of the foot where toes connect.... end Monday 13- June-2011 Will finish more later cannot sit here any longer hurts too bad......

Oh my friend, I am so sorry to hear this. Most of us here can relate to what you\'re going through. I hope you have a good spine specialist who can help you with this flare up. Sometimes a steroid pack can calm things down.I went for a power walk today but knew I went too far when I got that familiar pain in the butt that radiated down the back of my leg. I cut it short but it\'s a reminder that it\'s just waiting for me to push myself beyond the limit. I will pray you can find some relief and can get back to that garden, little at a time.

I\'m so sorry that a little bit of gardening has caused you so much pain. It just sucks when pain stops us from doing things that are positive and that give us pleasure. Plus having pain that limits our time on DS really is the pits, cause how then do we get the support that we need to cope with the pain? On a side note have you heard of the No Dig system of gardening? An Aussie women named Esther Dean wrote a book about the system she developed and it\'s particularly useful for people who have disabilities like back problems or wheel-chair bound. It does cost a little bit to set up... unlike just digging the soil you already have... but I have used it with a huge amount of success. I\'m sure if you googled you could find an explanation on the internet.
