Owiee!

It seems as though life is seldom dull for too long around me. Three large boxes of medical supplies were being delivered here Monday morning, so I decided to hold the front door (which is made of heavy metal) open by using the foot pedal on my chair. As I quickly rolled to the open door, it started closing faster than I thought it would. I had a very painful head-on crash with it. I wasn't wearing shoes at the time, so the end of the door smashed into, and between, my toes. The end result was three fractures in my right foot.

When I went to bed that night, my CNA's told me that my foot was black and blue and purple, had a large gash between two toes (which was still bleeding), and that the foot was extremely swollen. Oddly enough, after the initial blast of pain, that diminished until Tuesday.

My home health care nurse saw me Tuesday morning, and after examining my foot, she called my doctor's office and arrangements were made for me to go there for x-rays Wednesday morning. I was not too enthusiastic about going there since I was convinced nothing was broken or fractured. Well, I guess I can be wrong now and then.

Since I don't walk and put weight on the foot, and because the bones are still in the proper alignment, it was decided that surgery was not necessary. The gash was no longer bleeding, so sutures were ruled out as well. A dressing was placed on the toes, and is being changed every other day. I have a thick tube grip (medical sock) that I wear during the day instead of a cast. Ice packs are being used for 20 minutes three times a day, and I am using my regular medicines to control my pain, which has increased substantially. I am also supposed to sit with my chair tilted back and my foot raised, so this is playing havoc with my computer usage. Partially because of all this, I am now getting additional visits by my CNA's seven days a week.

My usual activities have been strictly curtailed, and I have canceled all my appointments until I see my doctor on Monday, August 16. This also means I will not be online very much for the time being.
