I am a believer that everything happens for a reason. About a month ago, I was complaining about how much prescription drugs costs. On one of the newer ones I take, the copay was a whopping $90. So I paid it and never gave it another thought.
Tonight I was streaming a movie on Pluto TV which has commercials and in one of the commercials, I saw our founder Doug Hirsh and I paid attention because I like this guy :) It turns out, he is on a mission to lower prescription drug prices. He designed a web sight where you just write in the name of what you take and it will tell you the price of it at every pharmacy in your area! He has already saved me $80! There are even savings on doctor visits and pet meds!
The story of how he decided to take this challenge upon himself, goes like this: A few years ago, Doug was given a prescription he wasn't sure he needed, especially after the first Pharmacy he took the prescription to, told him the drug would cost him over $400. Doug walked out with the unfilled prescription and decided to shop around. What he discovered was a prescription marketplace that seemed to offer little rhyme or reason. This mystery led to the creation of GoodRx and an ap that allows patients to shop around more easily.. 6 years later, GoodRx users have saved over $10 billion and one third of all prescribing physicians recommend it to their patients.

What amazed me the most was that one drug I get a script for had a $90 copay and that's a generic drug. I have medicare part D which pays for my drugs but because it is so expensive, it falls under a different classification, hence the high copay. I typed it in at GoodRx and found the exact same drug at a pharmacy just down the road from the one I was using for a price of $34 for a 30 day supply! I was reminded, not to use my medicare when buying this because I would still have been charged $90. I will have to remember that.

Hurrah! I ended up looking on line for the ciprodex I had to purchase for an ear infection for my son. The going price is $284. I got a $30 coupon off through the manufacturer and had to send in the form for the rest of the discount ($100 approximately). If you have insurance, and are eligible, they will give you the higher discount coupon to use at the pharmacy. The pharmacy told me that if I get the higher discount coupon, they will refund the difference. The pharmacy is the one that told me to go online, too. It's nice to have people sharing with others!

It's been in service for 6 years and I just found out about it by accident when I watched that movie....I tried to fast forward beyond it but it wouldn't let me...almost like it was meant for me to see it...and when I recognized the name, I paid closer attention. I don't have tv anymore cause it's too expensive so all the information I get about things is online.
I have used goodrx before. I didn't know that guy founded this website. What really surprises me about drugs at pharmacies is they often have many of the same drug under dif names. Your doctor won't know what they have or how much it will cost you.
A few years ago I saw my gynecologist for my annual and got my birth control pills prescription refilled. I went to Walmart and the price was over $100 for a month supply. So I didn't fill it, I asked to talk to the pharmacist. She told me they had another pill, the exact same thing, dif brand that would cost $8. So I called my doctor back and had him fax over a prescription for that instead. After they ran my prescription discount card it was only $3. This year I got switched to another type of pill and it's free.
Sometimes you just have to talk to the right people. Drug prices don't make alot of sense.

This is a footnote. I do business with an independent pharmacy that is not listed on goodrx however they still have coupons for them despite not being listed. I called up my pharmacy and asked them if they honored goodrx coupons then said they did not know. So then I told them how much cheaper the drug was selling for and a competing pharmacy and they suggested I come down with the coupon and they would run it through to see if it would work. I ended up paying a few dollars less then the price on the coupon! Imagine that! Thankyou Doug!
Cheers! I'm still waiting to hear from Novartis about the $300 ear drops for seven days...sigh...I really hope we get the discount. The pharmacy is willing to refund us the difference.
