The Chinese feel that Western dramatic realism atrophies the imagination. The dancers perform a group of preliminary dances behind the curtain until they make an important entrance called “peering over the curtain.” In this, a character fans the lamp by pulling the curtain in and out until the flames are spectacularly high. The dancer, still hiding his face, displays his hands and legs at the borders of the curtain. At the climactic moment the dancer pulls the curtain aside, displaying his awesome makeup, and stagehands remove the curtain until the next dramatic entrance. I have hopes that it will survive as there are still some people, who like me, are keen to keep it alive and will continue to promote it.

The traditional plays make reference to many facts of pre-Cultural Revolutionlife and history that are unfamiliar to young people. Furthermore, many of the stylized movements have particular meanings that can be lost on uninitiated audiences. Or perhaps changes in government policy and the cultural inertia of millions of young people listening to Western pop in shopping malls will erase what might have been a promising operatic renaissance. Like so much else in that region, it is an uncertain social experiment. For centuries, no entertainer was more glamorous, or more highly paid, than an opera star. I started as an instrumental composer, and a lot of those works got programmed at Asian-themed or Lunar New Year concerts. I never wanted to be pigeonholed, to be a reduced representation. I wanted to always open that Pandora’s box of messiness — and I encourage others to celebrate messiness, the unclean narrative of your life.

Although relief programs have already been carried out there, they have not brought any permanent improvement in the situation. She first appeared in Europe in Graz, Austria singing Beethoven’s concert aria “Ah, perfido! ” and Violetta’s Act I scena fromLa traviata with esteemed conductors Cornelius Eberhardt and Alexander Kalajdzic in 2006. After her appearances as Konstanze with Bel Cantanti Opera, she travels to Kansas to sing Siébel with Wichita Grand Opera in Faust with Samuel Ramey, Hector Sandoval, and Svetla Vassileva.
She has been the mezzo soloist in works ranging from Handel’s Messiah to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and in 2006, will be the featured soloist of Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. Over the course of her musical studies, Ms. Hill has been distinguished by many awards and scholarships. Most recently, during the summer of 2005, she competed and was chosen as a semi-finalist in the international vocal competition Jeunesses Musicales, held in Montréal.
