The 29 traditional theatres, represented by the ATIT, are institutions with strong roots in the territory that qualify nationally and internationally for an opera production of around 350 performances a year, focusing above all on promoting young artists. In the past several years there have been some stage productions that truly are representative of my community and me as a person. When I directed my own Butterfly in Arizona, I was empowered to speak out and interpret the opera with my own artistic voice. However at the same time I saw how communities were reacting toward productions around the country, i.e., Mikado, Turandot, Butterfly, etc. I felt conflicted and anxious, because Arizona gave me a traditional production to work with.
