Not what I expected
In one way I feel a sense of relief - in another I feel uncomfortable after meeting with the counselor. He knows that my husband and I are not quite on the same page, but did comment that we've made some progress in getting there. He used to be our son's counselor and has worked with us. It certainly helped that he knew our situation. I honestly thought that he would make some strong suggestions and one being - we provide some strong alternatives for T. Eventually, he said we'll probably have to do that, but for now he said we should sit down with T (even if it means getting him out of bed) and tell him that we love and support him but we also have some expectations of him. We will say that we know he's using and leave it at that. He also said for us to list our expectations and nothing more. We're not to add - consequences - especially since there aren't any to take away - other than putting him out on the streets. I told him I've been hesitating to turn off his cell because it's one way to communicate with T and he said he doesn't suggest having it turned off. I asked him how long can we do this for, since I know he won't follow through on any of this and he said for about a month. We can periodically meet with T and reinforce what we've said during that time. From there we go to the next step. The counselor knows that, although we've made incredible progress, we need to be a united front or T would eat us alive. And if one of us is railroaded into doing something they're not quite ready for - follow through on an earlier decision would be rather difficult to do. Note: It isn't that we haven't tried to talk to T but this time we're just going to be more relaxed in our approach. So in one sense - I relieved that we didn't have to kick him out - especially since my husband will be out of town for a week here and there. In another sense I want to do more because I see him slipping right before our eyes. But I know no matter what we do - we don't have the control we wish we could have. T didn't come home last night. BTW - I scored another goal last night in soccer! If it weren't for my goal- we would have tied. It was fun to win another one. Funny - I've been playing defense for most of the time. I'm good at it but was getting rather bored and I wanted some action so I spoke up and told them I'd like to rotate more and make more goals. I was only female that scored. Now they want me up front. Way too funny. * I know this is stupid but my collarbone still hurts and I haven't had it looked at. I'm small boned and I know that there's something to be concerned about. I know I need to go soon. Just don't want to hear I can't play anymore.
