Not sure how to do this

So I'm leaving. Might be close to a year later than the original plan, but better late than never. And apparently, the universe had just a few more words to say, things to teach me, before I was really ready for good. Perhaps this extra year was necessary to break every last bond? This is past year has been worse in some ways for "us" than even the most volatile, physically abusive years could be. I think it's because for the past two years I've been looking deep within, spending so much time on this board and ootf, writing, and getting actual feedback from smart people who counteract the crazy and quash the doubts that come creeping in. I've taken a hard look at my foo and the dysfunction, chaos, abuse, and mental illness that was my formative years, then took a hard look at my own kids and realizing I won't let him take them, so leaving is okay. Boundary setting, refusal to let him bait me, my refusal to JADE with him, well..he's not handling it so well. Hence the difficult year we've had. Or perhaps he hasn't changed at all. Maybe it's me, who once I saw behind the mask, once I was able to glimpse the truth among his lies, could never UNSEE or UNKNOW what I had been given. Either way I'm out.
Tonight I'm hurting , but mostly that's my pride howling. This was the final injustice, the proverbial straw that broke the camels back. I'm ashamed that I chose to accept the lies he told over the body wash and the flowers, while my brain was screeching at me to just open my damn eyes. But I didn't. I beat that stupid brain back into submission for trying to make me see or do something before I thought I was ready. I have fought the revulsion when I look at him, or he opens his mouth, managing (just barely) to keep from vomiting his vitriol and my hatred of him all over his stupid, disgusting self.
Problem is, I just don't know how to do this. The old me just wants to quietly disappear, and live to fight another day...without him...FAR away from him. But this other me wants to document everything and bury his a$$ under a mountain of financial and legal b.s. I want him to somehow pay for the years of sheer torture he has put me and my precious babies through, years in can never get back. I know the real me will probably create some hybrid concept of these two. I don't really want his damn money, I just want him out of my life, out of my kids lives, where he can never harm us again. Alas, I have this nagging suspicion that it doesn't really matter what I want, in the end he's going to fight me so hard I've got to be prepared. he doesn't believe he can lose, he believes himself smarter and superior in all ways to me, and most mortals. He believes he is RIGHT, that's the bottom line. For too long I was afraid he was. Now I know better.

You are getting stronger. And this guy is looking worse and worse. I have a different take on the two scenarios you present. You may go away and leave him in the dust. But you will need all of the evidence because he *will* come after you. He will. Mine never stops and I left him 6 years ago. These guys don\'t give up, even if they seem to not be interested at *all*. (I waited for mine to leave me for years!) Why? Because they think they own us. They own our ability to give them credibility. To take care of their every little need or whim. In his eyes, he will own you for life. It\'s creepy. But you can slowly extricate yourself from him. It will take time and patience. And all of those documents and evidence could help, too.

Thank you rosenkramtz, I know you\'re right. I\'ve tried to leave so many times, but he always finds me and out of fear I always give in. I know I cannot do that again, this time I won\'t survive it. It is kind of terrifying that yours has been trying for 6 years!!! I am so sorry! And so infuriated that they do think they own us, it makes me sick! But....it explains so much of their behavior. I mean, wouldn\'t it be nice if Armageddon is really just the earth swallowing up abusive narcs, and it\'s coming soon(like REALLY soon!)

Yeah, no kidding. I keep wishing that mine would just vaporize. Then I would feel truly free again.

Although, just to encourage you, I would say that things have truly gotten progressively better. The first few years out were hell. I was terrified of him. (Also, my youngest was only 4 when I left and he used the kids against me in court--yours are older, which is a huge advantage!) I saw over time, though, that he wasn\'t as smart as I thought he was. And that the judge figured out that he was a slimeball. And he kept on losing time after time. I have, on the other hand, gotten stronger and stronger. Even though I have kind of accepted that he will never leave me completely alone, it doesn\'t bother me as much because his significance is decreasing.

I want to encourage you to keep moving forward. You may be facing what look like impenetrable brick walls, but if you keep looking, you will always find a door or a ladder or a hole underneath them. Getting away from him is paramount. You are still so young. Your life is ahead of you. And you can still show your kids that being treated like that is not okay! It is a valuable lesson for them.

You are obviously a very strong woman--look at what you do every day! Aim your strength at getting away from him and you will do it!!!

Go you!
