NOT Autistic!
A few years ago, after my son was first diganosed as Autistic, I was told that once diganosed as autistic, it could never be changed. Once autisic always autistic! Well yesterday my son proved that saying wrong! Since day one I have fought tooth and nail to make sure my son was given every oppurtunity to do better than expected. I sought out early intervention when he was just 18mos old, even when his doctor said it wasn't necessary. I got him into a school at 3 years old that had awsome special needs teachers. By 4 years old, he was in a mainstream pre-K class. We traveled to San Antonio Monday to have my son reevaluated by a team of specialists at the Brooke Army Medical Center. For the first time since his diganosis, these doctors did a full on evaluation in every category, ie. speech, social skills, coginition... At the end of the evaulation they sat my husband and I down and explained every single aspect of the process and how they came to thier diganois. At the end of it all it came up NOT AUTISITC!He instead has a mild form of PDD, but nothing that will cause a problem for him in the present and future. He just needs a little exrta help being redirect every now and then. I was blown away. The doctor insisted we ween my son off his meds immediately! He was shocked that my son was on Resperidal in the first place. I am so very relieved, We have been blessed again with a miracle, first with the birth of my son Jonathan, whom they said I wouldn't be able to carry to term and now with this wondeful news about my Jarrett. I want to urge all you parents out there that are going through this problem. NEVER STOP being an advocate for your child, dont accept everything your told. If you feel that they may have made a mistake seek out a second opinion. These kids can get better!
