new news!
I went outside this morning to pick some blueberries for breakfast. As I approached the plants, I glanced at the ground and saw a piece of a robin egg. My heart sank as I immediately thought, an animal or another bird went after the eggs.
Ran inside my shed and climbed up to the rafters thinking I was going to see devastation. As I peered through the rafters I was almost afraid to peek down into the nest. When I did, I saw the most beatiful little bird babies I have ever seen!
I figured mom must have cleaned out the empty shells to give the babies more room. OMG they are so tiny! They must have just been born within the last few hours.
Cigars for everyone! I'm a bird step dad today! It's a great day!

Congratulations, Bob. Your family is growing. Its a good feeling to be a Dad, isnt it. Last year I had a Hawk build a nest in the overhang over my front door. My upstairs window overlooked the nest and I could watch her come and go, but the nest was down deep in the overhang, so couldnt see the babies. We became good friends as I would occasionally put a large "beef back bone - raw" by the bird bath on my deck and I would sit on the deck and she would land on the ledge, pick up the bone with her talons and fly to a tree in front of the deck, and I could watch her eat the bone on a limb she was on. During the day, if I was sitting on the deck, reading or just resting, she would fly to the water bowl (aka bird bath) and sit on it and drink, and then take a bath. I was sitting only 3 feet from her, but she never seemed to mind my presence. She disappeared in the winter, and lo and behold, she came back this Spring and built the same nest in the same spot (I had removed the nest last winter when I had my gutters cleaned). Nature is so wonderful, as you have found out. If you open yourself over to it, it can lift your spirits like nothing else can. Keep doing what you are doing. Keep us posted.
@ katrina39 What a treat that must have been for you. Yes, I would have done the same thing, My neighbor gets the left over meat scraps from a local grocery story and feeds the eagles in the winter, when food is scarce. It's so much fun to watch them because the ravens and crows will do all the work separating the meat from bone and the eagles will go after them and steal the meat away from them in flight! The crows do all the work for the eagles lol! Eagles are smart birds! Hawks are too. They do the same.

Congrats papa, how amazing life is.............................I would have loved to see that, our beautiful nature in action, you are so lucky to be part of this experience. I love that mama feels safe enough to have her babies in your shed, she knew she was in the right place, how proud of her you must feel.........................hugs
Congratulations on the new additions to your family. My little birds have left the nest and it was so fun to watch Mom take care of them. I miss them. My favorite pastime is sitting on the deck watching the birds. You can learn a lot from the birds. Can't wait to hear the next chapter in your adventure as the bird dad.
You guys get Eagles, I am jealous :)................................................we see them every now and then flying high up in the sky, never ever near us. I have wild kookaburras, parrots, lorikeets, cockatoos, currawongs and magpies that visit me multiple times a day for their food - but would love an eagle to visit !!!

@Sunset! Yes! I believe we can learn from everything in nature. Some animals are very comical, and I watch them often just to amuse myself.
That's so nice and we sure need some nice in the world right now..... big hug....... I love nature as well and feed the birds and squirrels... We get too many pigeons for my landlords taste but he still tells me to go ahead and feed them....smile.... Big hug.... Uncle Bob
Congrats on the new fatherhood. What about having a mini cam to watch them and even make a time lapse film? Could be a good winter project.
