new neuro
Well, I met with the new neurologist today. I was unsure of what to expect as I have met with so many doctors and don't think any of them really listen and want to work to find what is wrong. This doc did the usual taking notes and asking questions about my symptoms. He did his tests. He looked over my MRI's. When he was done with the exam he came in and talked to me about what he thought. He said it is hard to tell what could be the problem. He said my MRI's were definitely clear and showed no lesions. Then, and this really amazed me, he said that MRI's don't always show what doctor's need to see. He said that 90 times out of 100 people with MS will show lesions in an MRI. He said that there are those people out there though that won't show a lesion but still have the disease. He said the only way to find those is thru further testing. The doc said first he wants to do an EMG and an MRI of my spine. Those things have not been done or done properly. He said if they haven't found a cause for my problems thru those, then we move on to a lumbar puncture. This doc was good in my opinion because he seemed like he was interested in finding what was wrong and not just blowing me off. When he was doing the tests, I could tell how weak my right leg has become. It is amazing to me that I can't do some of the tests that I did just 10 months ago with no problems.
I feel good about this doc, but am not trying to get my hopes up. I am glad that he is going to do the testing that I felt should have been done before. He didn't look at me and tell me that "this is not a neurological problem" like the so called MS specialist did. He seemed like he genuinely wanted to find out what he could and help me get thru this. He did tell me that if he can't find the answers, it could all be psychological. He said that doesn't mean that you are making this up and "faking" it. He said that it means that I could have some deep down buried psychological issue and that would need to be addressed in order to "fix me". He was very kind about it all. I have to say the fact that he told me what he thought and what he was looking for was nice. The other neuros I have seen did not tell me what they were looking for or why they were doing certain tests. They came in, ran their tests, made notes, and told me to come back in 4 weeks. Never a word about what they thought. This one took the time and at least had the kind of bedside manner that I like. He may turn out to be a quack...LOL. I am trying to keep positive thoughts though.
