New and Confused
Hello - I have a million questions, but first let me start with how this journey began.
Six weeks ago I was traveling internationally (to Europe) and started feeling really gassy and just tired. After a couple of days of this, I began to experience loose bm's, low abdominal cramps, and headache. That continued for 2 weeks before I decided to go to an emergency room in Italy b/c I was feeling so bad. They did some blood work and my wbc count was 16.8 (I think their lab values said up to 11 was normal). So it was pretty high and I also had a really high crp as well as some other random things. The doctor there felt that I might have eaten something and perscribed cipro for 10 days. After about 5 days on cipro I started feeling better. Three days after finishing ALL the cipro, I started feeling really bad again. All over abdominal pain but no headache and no loose bm's. Went to a different doc and they thought I may have diverticulitis. Not sure why they thought that, but they perscribed cipro and flagyl. I took this combo of drugs (2 cipro and 2 flagyl) for 6 days and was still feeling really bad. By this point I am back in the U.S.A. and end up in an emergency room here because I am just not getting any better. They did a ct scan and the doctor said, "you have some sort of colitis/diverticulitis) - i.e. inflamation of the distol colon. He put the diagnosis of diverticulitis. So, once again, he perscribed cipro/flagyl and sent me home. I haven't had any loose bm's since the intial two weeks and my wbc count is back in a normal range. HOWEVER, I still do not feel well at all and still having some pain on my left side - near my navel. I guess I am just confused as to if this is really normal for diverticulitis. I don't know much about the disease but from what I read, I don't really think I fit into that category. No fever, no lower left side pain. Just cramping in my lower belly to begin with and now sharp pain in my mid section on the left side. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences they'd like to share? I would appreciate any advice out there. Thanks.
