Name Games
I often feel a massive confusion I am currently calling, "therapeutic schizophrenia." Whatever you care to call it, the current round is skidding around the latest workshop I am attending at the VA. The core concept is, "mindfulness." I feel like I have studied the concepts under the label,"Awareness." I do not mind the name change, but I want to keep building on what I have already started, regardless of what the mistress (woman in charge) is calling herself this year. I don't especially want to start over just because the missus has acquired a new mister. The group leader is big on names. Our sessions to date have begun mnemonic exercises to help us remember each other's names. Me? I answer to eye contact and respect. Don't much care what you call me. I have at least one different name for each of the cultural/linguistic lines I cross. Kinda like the diversity. Receiving the new name is almost a rite of passage into a new culture.
Names always have been a challenge for me. I be a person who can remember complex lyrics and chord structures and be unable to retain the name of the song or its composer. I have Google to remember those for me. Why invest allot of grey matter memorizing what I can look up?
I try not to argue labels. I should be able to use what I learned about manic depression in my therapy for bi-polar. The academic exercise of learning should function the same when I am speaking with someone who prefers to call it, "Education."
Still, I so often feel like the inept 2nd grader who was just humiliated for the faux paux of calling "Missus Teacher" "Miss Teacher." Heaven forbid that I should spell out Mrs.
