My views on love
Do you believe a man can truly love a woman and constantly betray her? Nevermind physically but betray her in his mind, in the very 'poetry of his soul'. Well, it's not easy but men do it all the time. - Mario Puzo, Fools Die
Betrayal and love are like ice and fire they are fundamentally opposed to one another I therefore believe that a man cannot love a woman while betraying her. Puzo renowned for his mafia novels and perverted understanding of the American dream perhaps thought so, maybe by his western worldly views of love it were possible to love one while at the same time betraying the beloved but I ascribe to a more eastern concept of love.
I being the hopeless romantic that I am believe in the love of Waris Shah’s heer, of the love of Mansoor who said “ana al Haq”and was hanged for it, I believe if a man truly loves a woman he should love her like Saif ul Malook did in the works of Mian Muhammad Baksh or in a fashion that Dante wrote about in his Divine comedy traversing the nine circles of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice from the devil. That to me is love nay that is Ishq; a word untranslatable into the English language a concept foreign to writers like Puzo.
The western view of love yearns for the flesh, desires being untied with the beloved. Ishq on the other hand is insanity; it is the desire of not being with the beloved but becoming part of it, it is an insanity that allows for the drinking of the wines of heaven through the eyes of the beloved giving intoxication greater than any other. Ishq causes the beloved to become an embodiment of the divine, the first step on the ladder of being one with the universe transcending the physical realm.
True love as Bullay shah, Waris Shah and all those great poets of old put it dictates the complete negation of the self disregarding person gain, desire or pleasure forgoing the self to please the beloved. As Bullay Shah said
“bullaya oudi oh janay sannu apni tore nibhawan day
kajri bunya zaat na ghatdi menu nach k yaar manawan day”
Similarly a more recent example of this thinking is reflected in the work of contemporary Shoaib Aziz who wrote:
“dosti ka dawa kya ashiqi say kya matlab
mai teray faqeeroun may, mai teray gulamoun may”
I am sorry but I do not agree with Puzo for a love so extreme, so true and pure cannot allow for betrayal and for us to assert assume and propagate a view otherwise is a betrayal of lovers world over and an insult to this sacred emotion.
