My uni application

The lovely Jen suggested I post my application here, if you get time I would love some honest feedback.
I have spent the past year studying towards a BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care. I will continue on this course for the next year and hopefully this will lead me to progress on to my chosen career path of Mental Health Nursing.
The role of a Mental Health Nurse appeals to me on many levels, although I feel there is no direct definition as there are many areas of mental health nursing, even though it is a demanding role I feel it is something I would enjoy and would like to make a difference to someone’s life. A Mental Health Nurse has many roles, looking after people with both acute and chronic mental health problems, liaising with different members of a mental health team including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and therapists. All parts of this role appeal to me as a person.
There are a multitude of reasons why I have chosen this field as the one for me, mainly down to personal experience, both good and bad, within the mental health service. I am a kind, caring and compassionate person, this is shown in my skills as a mother to a son with learning difficulties and in my personal life as well as the skills I have shown in the workplace during my work placements. I helped nurse my grandfather when his health was deteriorating and this gave me a great passion for wanting to learn more skills in order to help more people.
As a non-judgemental and empathetic person I enjoy helping people. My ultimate goal is to help reduce the stigma mental health conditions cause for people on a daily basis, I would also like to help people rebuild their lives and be able to manage a mental health condition.
I recently completed ‘race for life’ in aid of cancer research and over the past ten years have raised approximately £4000 for different charities including the fore mentioned and epilepsy action. I also plan to walk Ben Nevis in August 2011. Along with charity work I am also an avid reader and read many genres including texts that are related to mental health problems, thrillers and women’s literature. After reading ‘Sunbathing in the Rain: A Cheerful Book About Depression’ I felt that I would be able to make a difference to other peoples’ lives.
As part of my course in college I have been on a variety of placements, these have included working in a nursing home with residents that have dementia in a home specifically for Elderly Mental Illness. I enjoyed my time here immensely and it gave me a wider knowledge into the different mental health problems people face on a daily basis. My placement at ‘Widnes Hall and Lodge’ was extremely successful, receiving excellent feedback on my skills of working with both service users and staff. I am currently applying for a volunteer position in this establishment to widen my skills further.

I hope that by the end of this degree I will have enough knowledge, experience and understanding to make a difference. I would like to eventually work within the community to help normal every day people manage their lives to an extent that they are capable of.

Hmmm, I\'ll have to read and re-read it again, but I was gonna suggest including your own personal experience in there and why it means so much to you, why you\'re meant to do it, but you\'ve already done that. Is there a quote of words you have to meet, or do you just feel as though it\'s still lacking something? I think it\'s great!

Thanks Jen. It can be no more than 47 line, no word count it just has to fit into the text box. I just feel it\'s missing something, can\'t quite put my finger on what though if you get me?

Thanks Evelyn for your input Ev. Over here we have to admit mental helath problems etc and they will know about it on my application anyway so thought I might as well put it in. I may reconsider though and take it out
