MY TRIBUTE TO ELVIS PRESLEY

                              A Memorial Tribute

How can a man write a poem
About a man they call "The King"
When as a boy in Tennessee
In churches he would sing

He sang on "the Louisiana Hayride"
Won a talent show or two
He had a talent deep inside
And his popularity grew

He made a short recording
A gift for his mother's birthday
But, when a producer heard it
Elvis' career was on its' way

He made some top hit records
Fans came from miles around
To hear this boy from Memphis
With His "Rock-a-Billy sound

He bought a beautiful place to live
Graceland was its' name
He began to travel far and wide
He marveled at his own fame

He continued to make more records
He starred in movies too
Cars, homes, jewelry and planes
He was richer than he ever knew

He showered his friends with lavish gifts
Provided for his family too
He had a wonderful giving heart
But inside, he was lonely and blue

His fame became his captor
Graceland became his castle
He shut himself away from it all
From the world, its' pressure and hassle

Then on August 16th of Seventy Seven
The Lord looked down from His throne
He sent an angel to Memphis
And took Elvis Presley, home

The world was stunned when they heard the news
That "The King", Elvis Presley was dead
He's touched the lives of so many
Millions cried and hung their heads

Thirty five years have come and gone
Since that eventful August day
People still travel to Graceland
Bring flowers and pictures to say

"We still love you Elvis"
As by his grave they stand
Although he was known throughout the world
He was just a simple man

No-one will ever be like him
Elvis had his faults we know
But, he will always be remembered
He's still "The King of Rock and Roll".

I knew J.D. Sumner of the stamps, talked with him many times. I have visited with Elvis' "Uncle Vester" when he was alive and, I did a live interview and radio spot from Memphis, with George Klein, Elvis friend and school mate at Humes High School.  These are all good  and treasured memories.
