My Stroke Story
In 2004, I started falling backwards. I would get up wondering why I fell and go shopping. This happened 3 or 4 times. Being the person I am I would go to the doctor over a broken fingernail, but this time I just wouldn't visit the doctor. Finally I started to have a slight headache and I never have headaches. Then I began to become weak in my legs and could not walk. My husband and my kids diligently tried to get me to go to the hospital until finally, one morning my husband told me "get ready you are going to the doctor now" after he called the doctor and told them what was happening. And the doctor told him to bring me in immediately.
My family doctor admitted me the same day. They ran all kinds of test. While I was there some days I could walk and some days I couldn't, even though I never lost my speech I was sometimes disoriented. Finally after a week and a half, the doctor came into the room and told me I had a stroke. They gave me physical therapy while I was in the hospital and dismissed me with orders to come into the doctor office the very next day. I felt fine, they issued me a walker which I would not use even though my husband begged me to use it and I refused. That morning I was dressing to go back to the doctor all of a sudden I began to feel weak again. By the time my husband and daughter got me to the car I was limp as a dishrag but I still knew what was going on.
My doctor admitted me again. At this time he suggested I go to the Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. To receive a diagnosis, he was bewildered because my blood pressure was not high and wanted to know what caused the stroke. I told him that I would not go and they dismissed. Then I had another stroke 2 weeks later. I had therapy at the hospital,at the rehab for three weeks and 3 weeks of therapy at home. After 2 weeks after I began walking and my husband was working leaving me at home. I woke up in the hospital and have been there a whole day sleep, and when my doctor came in he believed it was the aggronox that I was taking. I was taking Plavex but i asked to be taken off plavex b/c it would make me cold.
I stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks. Then back to rehab again. After all of this I started having problems with a childhood disorder that started when I was 10 yrs old. This is a rare disorder called Porphyria (AIP). Along with being a stroke survivor I was hospitalized 4 or 5 times a year with stomach pains along with vomiting and high blood pressure, and sometimes kidney trying to fail.
I am so thankful to my husband and my children and very handsome grandson who wrote this :) They were so helpful during my recovery.
