My sister Joys email about seeing the Obama Train
My sister Joy sent this email the morning. I thought maybe someone here would be interested to read her account. Good Morning Everyone !We hadn't planned to go because it was so cold and we didn't think we'd see much, but we decided to go to see the crowd. It was 15 degrees, so I put on a turtleneck, wool sweater, big hooded sweatshirt, one of Jim's warm jackets, two pairs of pants, two pairs of socks, earmuffs, gloves and scarf. I looked and felt like the little boy in the movie, A Christmas Story. We heard on the news that we should park at Edgewood High School and get a shuttle to the train station. So we headed up Route 40. For a while we were along side the tracks the train would ride on. Every time there was any sort of tunnel under the tracks, a policeman was parked guarding the opening. There were people gathering in parking lots along the way just to see the train. Once at the high school the parking lot was packed. We found a spot along a curb and walked to the buses past vendors selling Obama hats and shirts and cologne (yes,Obama cologne). At the station we went through metal detectors (my metal hips were only a slight slowdown), then we planted ourselves midway between the press platform and the tracks. The fun part was watching the people. It was a happy, excited crowd, almost all black. We saw families with grandparents and children , even small babies, all wanting to be a part of history. As the train got closer we saw increased security in the air (helicopters) and also on the ground. The man behind me got the crowd chanting OBAMA..OBAMA..Yes we did..Yes we did...no more Bush..no more Bush...When the train slid by, the crowd exploded. I thought the woman behind Jim was going to pass out.In three minutes the train was gone, but the crowd was glowing. I heard one black woman tell her grandchild, "That will soon be the leader of the free world and we were this close to him!"Then we walked back to the car. Much love to all,Joy and Jim
