My Second Mom

I'm losing my second mom.  It may be today, tomorrow, or the next few days.  She's been a tough old bird the last year or so as she battled one health problem after another, plus supporting her husband who's in a V.A. hospital in another town.  She and her husband were known for being very particular about everything, whether it be doctors, cars, eating out, furniture, or appliances.  You knew something was special if they liked it.  I lost my dad when I was in my early 30s.  My mom passed away a few years ago.  When she died, Aunt Margeurite and Uncle George kinda took over.  They were there when I needed help.  Times when my car broke down and I took a taxi to and from work, some how they found out about it and would give me a ride home.  They offered rides to the grocery store or wherever I needed to go.  When I spent a night and a day in the state mental hospital, she and her daughter met me at the bus station when I got back to town.  When I got in the car, she asked me if I was hungry.  She had a coupon for a Whataburger,,two for the price of one.  Nothing tasted better than that Whataburger with an order of fries.  She never forgot my birthday and never missed sending a Christmas card.  I'd been putting off going to see her when she was placed in a nursing home, making any excuse I could.  I just didn't want to see her in her condition.  But, I went to see her this morning.  The small, frail, person sleeping in the bed wasn't my aunt.  I wanted her to complain about me not shaving or my hair being too long.  She is the last of her generation of her family.  The youngest of the siblings, the only boy in the family, died many years ago.  My mom passed away next,  Mom was the oldest.  Another aunt, second oldest, died about two years ago.  Aunt Marguerite, was the third in line.  Some people are lucky to have one mom in their life.  I was double lucky in that I have had two.  It's time for her to rest.  She's done so much good for so many people.
