My poem
I wrote this (out of nowhere because I'm not a poet) the day after I was arrested for DUI. As I sit with blinding light in my eyes; Sweaty and full of butterflies, The officer steps to my side and asks; "Where are you going tonight so fast?" I stop and wonder before I reply, Nervous and shaky as if I might die. My excuse is poor and as he escorts me, The sound of his voice is muted while testing my sobriety. I tilt my head up and look at the stars; Not feeling this high since leaving the bars. Before I can blink I'm surrounded by authority; And led in cuffs without a bit of dignity. The familiar streets zip by in a flash; And panic rises as I ponder a dash. Then a reflection stares at me through the windowglass. No recognition of myself, the accident, or the past. The worst is confirmed on the police scanner. "The victim is DOA," came through in a monotone manner. Sounds of a heartbeat thud in my ears, Unable to see our arrival through tasteless tears. As I'm processed through papers at police headquarters, Images hit of my mother pleading to the judge and lawyers. "Don't take my child from me like this!" A retort is echoed from the back of the courtroom; "No one asked permission to save my child from doom." So here's my advice for those who drink and drive, You may want to consider how you'd spend three to five. Or to live and suffer with no one to look, At the remorse you have for the life you took.
