My Mother by Pearl Emily Brown

The following is a poem that was written by my paternal grandmother. She wrote the poem in 1927 when she was away at school. She wrote her mother a letter that accompanied this poem and I'm going to copy that in to be read first. The Letter At School Noon Time Mama Dear, I'm sending you a little poem I wrote the other morning as I sat in my room thinking about you and longing to express in some way my love for you. It may not be much in the way of poetry, but I feel that way, and as I sat there my thoughts just naturally formed in rhyme, so I wrote it down that way. I mean what it says but it don't say half what I mean. Everything is as usual with me. Yours with Love Pearle MY MOTHER However dark the hour be There's one true friend left to me. Though the world pass by me unaware There's always one who loves and cares. When I feel sad and all alone I know by smiles, by look, and tone. That constant as the rising sun She's there for me and we are one. Who all my dreams and fond hopes share my joys her joys, my cares her cares. Her love is not the kind which only seems my trials are hers, and hers my dreams. She never fails to understand Her faith is like an outstretched hand. To guide me through life's darkest hour Her love my greatest lifting power. Shall bear me up when dark clouds gather And make me strong to brave all weather. With such a charm as this to shield I gladly face life's untried fields. And though some failures I may make I hope to conquer for her sake. Each night I pray to God above To make me worhy of her love. by Pearl Emily Brown Sisk I read this poem at my mother's funeral in April... It was interesting that my stepsister called me to tell me she was sending a booklet of our grandmother's poems that she had put together the day my mother died. She did not know yet. My dad married her mom when he and my mom were divorced. wow say that three times fast... Anyway the booklet arrived the next day... I really felt like so much of what my Grandma Pearle had said all those years ago really applied to my mom and her love for me... I almost lost it on the first two lines because at that moment I felt like I'd lost my best friend... I've learned since that my mom is and always will be here inside of me...
