My Love
Christmas 2010
My Dearest Dick,
Both Christmas & New Year’s are now behind me. My first in over 30 years without the love of my life. Gary, Candy & Ted came to dinner. Food was placed at the head of the table. That place will always be yours. I put your name tag there. It did not take very long to un-wrap the packages. Christmas was always around 10 of us. Now four. That was more than Thanksgiving at Gary’s where there were just the 3 of us. Ted went home to Georgia. Your bro gave me a wonderful Christmas card. His profound thoughts on my moving ahead and discovering new memories while cherishing those past. It was meant to give me support but really just made me dwell on the fact that I only want our memories. Yours and mine. I downsized the menu a lot. Only did a Marie Calendar Dutch Apple pie. No baking. I did make fudge for Kipp & his crew. Smallest turkey I ever cooked. I didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to put it in the oven .No ham since Gary is on a low sodium diet. I did so much the night before that it made Christmas a pretty easy task. Work wise that is. There were only two stockings hung. Yours and Kings. Your card and this letter will go in there. It will be there next year when I add 2011.
I want to thank you my love for all the wonderful years we shared our love for one another. I never thanked you enough for all the many things you did for us. You made me the happiest women in the world. I was for sure the luckiest. Every time I look around here I see the wonderful things you did while here. The wonderful bridges, the beautiful road you laid out, the beautiful A/C cover, the garage, the detached garage. All the small trees we planted that are all now mature 30 years olds. The fences we put in. The Oak in the back yard is unbelievably beautiful. The rock work coming up the drive. This was a work in progress always but it was always fun working with you on our place. We pretty much just lived for this place, mom & our time together. I regret none of that. Now that I am alone I do wish that I developed more close friendships here. Noel is gone & Lynne works so many hours & has married. Most of our friends here are all over in the DFW area. All American Airline type & don't have much in common with me CA is a long way away to get a hug. That will be my N.Y. resolution. Make some friends. Widows. Ones that understand me. I do want to tell you about a wonderful website that I am on. Remember, that’s how I met Carol. The B.Cancer website. She, over the past 12 years has been such a help to me. We went through treatment at the same time. I was so happy to go to N.J. & meet her and her wonderful family face to face. Lasting friendships can be made in strange places. That’s what brings me to tell you that I have made a few friends on DailyStrength. It is a site for widows. They understand me here & I understand them. This will be posted on that site as well as being placed in your stocking.
I know that I told you often how proud I was of you. I’ve never known such a gentleman. You always said, “Chivalry is not dead just mortally wounded”. You never failed to open a door for me, pull out my chair, or take your hat off in public. This even at home. It was never just for show. Funny, the first time we would pick up someone I’d have to tell them to wait & not open the doors for themselves. I remember Benny looking out the window one day when we brought Brenda home & he got mad because you opened the car door & escorted her to her door. And there I was in the car. I miss that baby. I miss everything about you. You were simply the best & that’s why I don’t want another. I will just wait until I can be with you again. I know that you had a wonderful Christmas in heaven & I trust you kissed my Mommy & met my Daddy. Give him a big hug for me. I love you with all my heart & soul and always will. Thank you for being you Your loving wife. Forever yours. V

When I think of the women I have heard complain so about their husbands, and men in general, I am so thankful for those of us who were blessed with kind, gracious and loving men. It makes missing them even harder, but it makes memories so sweet and heart filling.
Hugs and best wishes for 2011!
Our stories sound so much a like. I spent the last 37 years with my husband also planning and building our dream house. My husband, Richard, was a great man whom I miss so much. We are feeling the same hurt, loneliness, and feelings. My God help us all by easing this terrible pain.
Thank you all for your nice comments. He was truly my life. I wish that I could move on a little faster. My life will never be really great again but I hope and pray that it will be bearable. God bless us all, Val
