My little baby embryos
For all my ambivalence in the last few days and weeks, I am really happy to have our little buns home today. We had a great embryo status report. We started out at 8 embryos five days ago, and only lost one along the way. By today, we had two great-looking blastocysts. The remaining five embryos were all still contenders, all at the pre-blastocyst stage, "at the blastocyst's door." We might actually get to freeze some this time. When I came home I introduced my mom to the concept of "totsicles," the potential for frozen grandchildren. I have never, ever regretted choosing to switch clinics from the smaller one to the larger one, where they supposedly were going to treat me like a number. I found that in the latter place (where they had all their notes computerized) they were actually a lot more likely to remember my name. ("Kay," not just the "Katherine" that's in the charts). The one thing I almost regretted, though, was that I had loved my doctor soooooo much in the initial consultation, but I didn't see him much at all during the monitoring. Both this time and last time we had the random doctor on call do most procedures. And then this morning, there he was! I got to have him perform the transfer. We got to talk to him in person about the benefits of two embryos versus three (we opted to go with two because he said the whole bunch was of better quality than the bunch last time. If we have to do this again, we'd consider a more aggressive three-embie transfer). I made a few jokes during the procedure. I asked the embryologist if he'd picked the two cutest ones. I don't get the feeling many people ask that. And then as they were wrapping up stuff, I told everybody (nurse, embryologist, doctor) to stay put because we wanted to take a picture. I then realized that my legs were still spread wide, with the doctor's head right there. I added, "It's a special kind of porn." When they started to leave afterwards, we did have to catch the doctor before he left. "Oh," he said, "I thought you were just joking." My shy James, feeling the confidence of his birthday and Father's day, almost yelled out as the nurse was about to leave. He asked for a picture of the embryos. I can't believe I forgot that! The embryologist said he'd email it to him, so we left James's email address. I'll post as soon as I have it. Can't wait to see my little babies. A few hours of the CSI marathon has gotten kind of tiring. How many days would I have begged for bedrest? But it's just until tomorrow. I hope everyone is doing well, and enjoying this Parents' Day with lots of great hope and confidence for our collective futures. (Did I just write that? Lame.)
