My life at my mother's house
I have used this blog to keep track of my life, and reviewed it from time to time. You see, I have trouble keeping track of the order of things that have happened.
Two weeks ago, I went to bankruptcy court. My case will be resolved by the end of this week, and I am praying that they do not take my daughter's money away from her (in her college fund) because my name is on it.
Living here is expensive - mostly taxes and insurance. When I first got my car, I did not insure it. Shortly after I got separated from my husband, they instituted mandatory insurance in Rhode Island, and now it is to the point that I have to pay 1x the value of the car for taxes and 2x the value of the car for insurance each year.
When I was living in Maine, my taxes and insurance for the house were $4K per year, and my car cost me about $600 per year to insure and register, which included the tax. Since my car is now 12 years old, that is about equal to 1x it's value. The heat, however, was also at the least $4K per year, which did not leave me much.
In Maine, I was over budget each month, and it cost me everything I own. Here, the expenses are less, as heat is about half what I was spending in Maine and there is no mortgage, however, by myself, I cannot afford to live here.
Just the taxes, insurance, water, and sewer bills will cost me about $675 per month which is more than half of what I get per month. If it was not for the child support, of which room and board is taken, I would not be able to afford to eat, and if you get more than $848 per month in this state, you are not eligible for food stamps.
If I stay here past when the child support is coming in, I will again be in the position of having no discretionary income each month, and now I have no credit left, because I have filed for bankruptcy and lost my home.
I'm partially relieved to not have to pay for that place any more, but I lost more than my home, I lost 3/4 of my personal property with it. I had 5 rooms of furniture when I moved up there, and now I do not even have 1 room full left.
I don't get enough from social security to save anything, and if my mother's property is taken when it becomes part of her "estate", I will have no inheritance, either, which is just par for the course.
There really has to be a better way than using the majority of your money for a place to live so that you have no life.
My mother's yard, which is a standard size lot, has not been properly tended in years. The people she had hired to cut the lawn only cut the lawn, they did not trim the bushes or feed the lawn ,so there is little grass in it, and the bushes overhang the yard, shading or choking her plantings. I've made a dent in the trimming, but there is a great deal to go = and in this town, you have to purchase bags to get rid of the stuff.
I don't want to be here, but I have to stay, for now. I doubt that my mother will ever come back to this house again, but that is just as well. It doesn't take long for her to drive me crazy, and I am no nurse. She finally got approved for Medicaid, so the nursing home will be taken care of, but I am not secure in my position here, as I have only been here for a year, and they imposed a 2 year minimum prior to my being allowed to stay on afterwards.
But I dont' want to stay here, really. It will be a constant struggle for me if I do, between the maintainance and extremely high taxes. If I am allowed any inheritance - which would mean I'm allowed to sell this house, then I would be able to get a tiny place of my own that I could (maybe) be able to afford to support on my social security. Otherwise, I will never own property again.
I am very angry at this government for imposing this mandatory insurance. I am paying $106 per month for Medicare, and if I see a doctor, still have to pay more than half of the bill myself. I am also paying more than $100 per month for car insurance, even though I have NEVER had an accident in 35 years of driving. My mother's house insurance is about $100 per month, as well, so that makes over $300 of my $1200 per month just going to the mandatory insurance. 1/4 of my income.
Damn this government!
