My husband thinks IVF is romantic, and I tend to agree
Only my husband could make something as cold and clinical as IVF as romantic as ever..
My husband and I were in the car on the way home from work and he shared a thought with me which I initially felt was very strange. I should probably state that my husband is a man who doesn't really share his feeling often and isn't much of a talker. Mostly he listens to me jabber on about anything under the sun and he says that makes him happy. So when he randomly tells me something about how he feels, knowing that it's a rare moment, I shut up and completely take in everything he says.
So we're in the car, caught in traffic and he turns to me with almost a tear in his eye. I ask him what's wrong and he says to me that what we're going through makes him feel so loved. He has so much emotion in his voice but I'm confused about what he means, to me this journey sucks, everything about it sucks, so I ask him to explain further. He goes on to say that he feels so touched every time he thinks about the IVF we're riding because to him, the journey itself is a reflection of the love and commitment that him and I have for each other. The fact that we're willing to go through all of this for and with each other touched a soft spot in him.
At first I thought it was weird because I'm like how can this struggle be anything but resentful, cold and lonely. But despite my initial reaction I gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek and thought about what he said a bit more and realised that he was right. This journey that my husband and I are on and the sacrifices we are making for each other so we can have a baby together is such a reflection of how much we are committed to and love each other. It's brought us closer together.
I didn't think it was possible but my husband has made this entire crappy journey actually very romantic. He coddles over me when I take an injection, beams with pride and kisses all my needle spots when they hurt, he cooks for me all the time even when I'm tired or not. He relishes taking over the daily chores while I "sit back, relax and watch TV". He loves looking after me while "we're trying to make a baby." We've become such a solid team and it makes us feel so so loved and special.
So I have this new outlook on this IF journey that I'm on. I no longer see it as this clinical way of making a baby that is cold and separate from any love or intimacy. If anything, I see it now like my husband does, as a true act of our love for each other. When I finally have my little baby I'm going to say to him or her: You were made with all the love that me and your Daddy have for each other. (Just like any other fertile couple) This journey has become such a romantic expression of me and my husband's love for each other, and it makes me feel as emotional as it makes him feel.
I love him so so much.
