My Hero.
I have a handful of people in my life that I call my heroes. which include the members of My Chemical Romance, my aunt, and someone someone who is very important and special to me even though he is no longer with me that is My Grandpa.
I remember the first time i met my grandfather. I was just about to turn 3 years old. I remember i really liked him and i felt a connection with him. He made me happy. He was always smiling and laughing all the time. I spent my 3rd birthday with him. I dont really remember it that much but i do rememeber that he made it a good day.
I was living in Massachusetts and he was living in Florida and every year he would come up from Florida to visit my aunt and the rest of the family. My aunt and my mom lived in the same house, my aunt lived upstairs from us, and when my grandfather would come to visit us, i would always be the first one to run up the back stairs and knock on my aunts door to go see him. I remember being so anxious to see him, not the bad kind of anxious but the good kind the excited kind. i would sit down on my aunts couch and look out the window waiting for the car with him in it to pull up.And every time it did i would go and run down the front steps and open the front door to my aunts and ran outside to greet him. It was always me first. No one else could beat me to it.
I remember one time when he stayed with my mom downstairs, and i was so excited because i got to be around him the whole time. In the morning he would make me Pancakes with these little hot dog things. And it made me so happy. He used to make me laugh and we used to have a good time together. He was always smiling and laughing with me.
Every year he would send me something for my birthday and christmas. He used to send me dolls and pretty dresses that i loved and treasured. I loved getting letters from him, im kind of sad i didnt keep any of those. But i still remember the feeling i got when i recieved his letters. It felt like someone actually cared about me.
One year for Christmas he sent me this bear and it had wings on the back, and it said a prayer when you would press its foot. I pressed its foot so many times that i wore it out. I kept it until i was 18, and my aunt get rid of it not knowing why i still had it that long. I loved that bear. I used to sleep with it and i took very good care of it. It came with a necklace that broke on me and i was very sad when that happened, but i reminded myself that i still had the bear and that was the most important thing to me.
I remember talking to him on the phone sometimes. And when i did i was very happy to hear from him. Hearing his voice comforted me, because i knew he cared about me. Even though we lived 1000 miles apart, i knew deep down inside he really cared.
I remember going down to Florida one summer to visit him. And i had a great time. I always did when i was around him. He was such a great person.
When i got the news that he was sick it made me anxious. He wanted us to move to Florida so that he wouldnt be alone. My mom wasnt going to do it at first, but i talked her into it. I was the one that wrote the letter to him explain that we wanted to help him and move down there for him. And that i was going to bring my cat and that i couldnt wait to live with him. And that i was very happy about it. I didnt care that i was leaving my family behind. All i cared about was being down there with him and being around him, and helping him. I was only 11 years old and i wanted to help him.The only part that bothered me about going down to Florida is that i didnt want to leave my aunt, and i knew i was going to really miss her.
When i got to Florida and i saw my Grandfather i was really happy. I was happy i was able to convince my mom to do something for once. and she listened to me about it. He was happy that i was living with him. I didnt have a room when i was living with him, but i didnt even care about that at all. I was more concerned with helping him if he needed it.
I used to help him with his cat i would give his cat fresh water and i would feed her. I would make his bed for him in the morning and help him with other things if he asked me too. My sister never did though. Showed what type of person was. He even yelled at her one time because she wouldnt make his bed when he asked her to. (He was disabled and had a hard time walking and stuff).
Every time he would go to the hospital when he was sick i would get so scared that he was going to pass away on me. And i would always go with my mom when he was in the hospital because no one knew how much longer he had. It scared me that he was really sick. I didnt want to loose one of the most important people in my life.
I remember the night he got really sick. My mom had had two phone lines so that if he needed her and couldnt get out of bed he could call her on her line. and one night he was so out of it.. he called the phone line and said to her, "I think i just died". Then she called 911... I cried so much because i thought he was going to die that night.
Things went downhill from there. He was put in a nursing home and hated it, so they had him set up at home. My mom took care of him (she's a CNA) and i would always go in there and visit with him and kept him company. He got really sick fast.
I remember him going back in time to when he was way younger. He would talk about feeding the cows and taking care of the farm... I went in there one time and sat near him and he wanted me to hold and his and i did and i remember him saying he remembered me and he said something like i would always be his little girl (he used to call me his little girl all the time).
I remember the night that he passed away all day i KNEW he was going to pass away. I just knew it. I felt it in my gut that he was going to pass away. I remember being sad all day and had this heavy feeling all day. It freaked me out.
He was so out of it the night he died.
Me and my mom and step dad were all sitting in the living room which was right next to his room and all of the sudden we heard him gasping for air, and then his last breath came, and when i heard that, i knew he was gone. It was probably one of the saddest moments of my life. And my step dad went in there to check on him and he had passed. I walked by the room after he had passed and i saw him... and it was the saddest thing i have ever wanted to see. He had his eyes open and he had mouth open too. His eyes were still the same blue they always had been just really glossy. Both cats were at his feet. His cat Peedee and my cat Peaches...
I remember crying that whole night, and i think thats the first time i ever really cried myself to sleep. It was one of the saddest nights of my life. I remember being emotionally numb for a while after that. Going to his wake was hard. They did a ceremony for him ( He was a veteran, he was in the Airforce) and they folded up the flag, and handed it to ME. I didnt know what to do with it so i handed it to my mom. And i was so numb. At his funeral, my aunt walked me up the casket. He looked peaceful. He looked like he was smiling. I will never forget it.
After he had passed away. I would go into his room (which was turned into my moms room) and i would FEEL him in there with me. I felt like he was always right next to me in everything i did. It was a great feeling. I dont have it anymore because i think i blocked it out or maybe its because im not living in that house anymore, but i miss it. I miss him, and even though he is no longer phsycially with me, i know he'll always be in my heart. He'll always be one of my heroes.
