My Empty Nest
My home is so empty,
It doesn’t bring me joy.
I haven’t adjusted to the quietness yet,
I can’t imagine that I will.
When out and seeing teenagers I feel sadness,
I often used to recognize at least one of them in a crowd.
now they’re all strangers and won’t be someone I know,
that moment of recognizing someone,
now there’s nothing at all.
Will it ever become normal?
Will I ever have the same happiness in my heart?
The busyness, the duties to perform, the meals to make, the clothes to wash,
the dishes to wash, the excitement of dreaming of a future trip, painting of a room buying new clothes, getting a phone.
There was always someone to share with,
To do something with,
I’m alone now.
I don’t know why it’s so hard,
I enjoyed when they went on vacation and I got a little break,
but I always enjoyed when they came back.
They’re gone and I’m to give myself a pat on the back,
I’m to do all the things I put on hold,
But there’s no one I’d rather do things with than them.
I wasn’t their friend,
I was their mother,
But they sure were a joy to do life with,
And now I’m alone.
I don’t know how to watch tv,
I watched what they watched,
It only makes me lonely now when I sit on my couch.
I know it’s going to get easier,
I’ll turn on some music and walk the dogs.
But right now, I feel so alone.
It doesn’t bring me joy.
I haven’t adjusted to the quietness yet,
I can’t imagine that I will.
