My Dog Died Yesterday

My dog Nama, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, died yesterday.  I got a voicemail this morning from my ex to tell me he died about 3:00 PM yesterday.  There is a coincidence here, because at that time yesterday I was standing in my office, and suddenly felt totally off balace, and fell against the wall.  It freaked me out enough that I went home for the afternoon, but felt fine after I got there. Nama came into my life in Nov 1995, when my ex and I went to a breeder's home to see a litter of pups.  Little puppy Nama came over to me and promptly crawled under my long skirt and stayed there.  We bonded right then and there LOL. He was a precious dog.  He was intelligent, gentle, and protective, but not aggressive.  I used to love taking him for walks on the pier a few minutes from my home, and people would always stop us, ask what kind of dog he was, tell me he was beautiful, and want to pet him.  Nama enjoyed the attention, and was always very gentle with the little kids who sometimes stood about eye to eye with him. Nama used to try to sit on my lap....which was more like standing over my lap with his tummy resting on my legs LOL...such a big silly baby.  When I got a tiny kitten from the animal shelter, the kitten used to walk through his legs which must have seemed like tree trunks in a redwood forest.  He allowed the kitten to sleep with him and played very gently with her. Nama was very protective of me.  Once when I was lying in bed, and my ex was standing over me and screaming at me, Nama jumped up on the bed, took a stance straddling my body and stared fixedly at my ex (who he also loved).  Nama made it plain he was defending me and would not allow my ex to go any further toward me.  I have never forgotten this. For a while after the separation, the ex and I "shared custody".  As my ex began to exhibit stalker-like behavior, and even "jokingly" threatened me with an exacto knife when I dropped Nama off one day, I grew more reticent about delivering the dog back and forth. When I had to move, I could not then afford a place that would allow me to have a 100 lb dog.  I reluctantly agreed to allow the ex to keep Nama, with the stipulation I could have him back when my situation changed.  My move was about 6 hrs away....and I was not able to get back often for "visits".  I remember crying at a scooby-doo commercial one day...(what an idiot LOL)...but I really loved that dog.  No matter how long between visits, Nama was always overjoyed to see me and did celebration laps around the yard at my arrival!  The ex told me Nama began escaping the house after my visits, breaking down a wooden fence gate, breaking through screens, to be found miles away.  He never did anything like that before....I have always wondered if he was trying to find me..... I have periodically talked with the ex to check on Nama.  He lived to be 13, which is a very long life for a big dog.   I will miss him.  I have had his picture posted in my photos since I got on this site....the Happy Dog. For those of you who are not dog lovers, this all probably seems like sentimental drivel....but I know some of you will understand why I am sitting here crying like a baby at the loss of my great friend, Nama.

Dianne, I am so sorry for the loss of Nama. This is in no way sentimental drivel, this is mourning. Mourning for the loss of the friend you loved so dearly, who loved you back unconditionally. I had a Rhodesian when I was a young child, they are very special dogs. I\'m sending you thoughts of comfort and love.

I have had many pets that I felt that way about so I understand your pain. You have just lost a member of your family! The grieving process is the same either way. I am sending you love and strength.

Of course I understand. Dogs are people, too. Sorry, Dianne. 13 is a good, long, dog life; especially for one his size. He\'s in Dog Heaven. I loved reading about his life. Some of the best people I know where dogs :) Love you, Robin

We had a schnauzer that lived to be 15 people years old and \"Sugar\" is loved and missed. Dogs truly love us unconditionally and I totally understand your loss. I am so sorry.
Hugs and tears,

Dianne, I am not a dog lover, but your post made me see how someone could very well love a doggie. I am
really sorry that Nama passed away. And the issue at your office at the time of his passing is definately one of wonder... he brushed by you as he passed away? What a connection the two of you had.

I agree that the times he escaped from your ex\'s after your visits he was trying to find you. I\'ve seen a lot of movies about dogs and their masters/owners (Jordan loves shows with dog - all of the Air Buds, etc) and there is a real bond.

In the world of people with special needs, dogs serve as guards, guides, and companions.

Thank you for sharing about Nama. I was blessed reading about his life with you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Family is family, two legged or four. You will always have wonderful memories and I am sure he treasured you as much as you treasured him. Try to find a little peace today.

Oh Dianne, I am so sorry for your loss. Anyone who has had a pet for any length of time will understand how you feel. Please don\'t ever apologize for feeling sad or crying for your lost friend. It sounds like you had a great relationship with Nama. And 13 years is a very long time to have a Ridgeback. Like I told my BF when he lost his precious Great Dane last year (she died at 10), remember ever moment and believe that Nama is with you all the time. Let your heart grieve. The only thing I will warn you about is it didn\'t take long for BF to decide our home needed another dog because neither of us could stand the fact that there was not a dog in the house. He adopted an older dog that had been running the streets and needed a good home to live out the rest of his life and he got it! lol I will say a little prayer for Nama and a big one for you. It\'s hard when we are the ones left here to grieve the loss of our loved one, but as the days and weeks go on, you will find that loss gets a little more bearable. Let me know if you need to talk. I\'ll be thinking of you. Ginny

I am sooo sorry for your loss!! It is truly heartbreaking!! They bring such a joy to our life!! I Love how Nama chose you, they are incredibly smart:)! When my lab (cowboy) passed it was pretty traumatic, not only did I lose a great companion I lost my THERAPIST. Some nights after the kids and the hubby went to bed I would cry and Cowboy would lay his beautiful head in my lap and stare at me with those beautiful brown eyes as if he took it all in!! Believe Me Nama, has his eyes on you and when you get to return home to our Heavenly Father Nama will be right there to welcome you with his celebration laps!!:):)
