My doc is bizarre.
I was dreading and dreading seeing my hematologist today.But it did not go as terribly as expected. The good part:I was initially greeted by a different new doc who I really liked.She was kind and seemed concerned that I had a second PE. The bad part:My doc is really really conservative about putting peope on coumadin.This was my SECOND PULMONARY EMBOLISM and I have a protrhombin gene mutationand she is not sure I should be on coumadin for life! She said that my first PE was provoked by BC pills and my second one was "unprovoked."(I agree with that.) Then, she said that the protocol is to not prescribe anti-coagulants for life if you only have one unprovoked PE. So she's not counting the first PE? She would like for me to have 3 PEs before I am on Coumadin for life? Seems nutty nutty nutty to me. I don't have to see her again for a year. If she suggests taking me off, I will tell her "I need a second opinion" and perhaps never see her again...

I believe that you are being your own best friend a that you are a good advocate for your health and well being. I would not hesitate to get a second opinion under the circumstances.
I think you should definitely get a second opinion if you are uncomfortable with what your doctor is telling you. I can\'t believe she would be hesitant to put you on Coumadin for life after having 2 PEs. I only had one and it was the most horrifying experience of my life. There are a lot of wonderful doctors out there who will understand your concern, I\'m sure. Good luck!
For my PE I was told that if I have another PE then I will have to be on the thinners for life. There was no mention of unprovoked or provoked PEs
I think as long as we\'re given all the information that we should be allowed to choose if we want to stay on thinners even after 1 PE. I almost died from mine, surely that gives the right to choose if you want to risk it again?
You get a second opinion if you need to and stick to what you feel is right for you! xx
