My Child

My baby is 6 years old..... she has always been different than my older two but all kids are different. I learned that quickly as a mother. I have always had small concerns about her learning. I had her tested for speech in preschool. She was fine but her older sister needed speech so just wanted her helped if she needed help. Kindergarten went pretty well but we did notice she lingered compared to other kids with learning. BUT she has always been overly obsessed with detail of certain things and entertains herself for hours. She is quite imaginative and a ball of energy.
WELL come first grade here we go. FROM the moment of her first spelling test I knew it wasn't right. She spelled words nowhere near the sounds. I was a little unsure what to even think. The teacher reassured me some kids just don't spell well and take more time and practice. Well at home we have pure homework frustration hitting self, screaming, crying, calling herself stupid. First report card comes out she is failing. I was so not happy as I knew she was struggling but not failing! So scheduled conference where her and reading teacher attend to inform me her learning has flat lines and this was Halloween. I was so upset.....My child, Deja, tries so hard. The teacher stated that, the reading club teacher said that and I see her try...... Her teacher says for some reason she isn't processing or remembering.....SIGH I tell her I really feel she needed tested as we are close to half way through school year...they go on and on about process and they need data and I need to talk to guy in charge of that department.
OK so I do that all for a meeting to have her tested! I made the calls, wrote the letters, and finally before Thanksgiving we sit for this meeting. It was LONG and I had to basically state over and over why I wanted her tested and all sudden both teachers went from yea we think she should be tested but we need data TO we aren't comfortable testing her just YET...WTH. So in the end all agreed with me except those two. The child psychologist, special ed teach and guy in charge special education.
So next week is meeting to go over her results but today was report card day.....oh lower grades! OMG can I freaking cry??? We read, we do homework, we spell test nightly.... she tells me Deja isn't where she needs to be DUH I know that! ANd for me to do homework with her....I am so annoyed. I just placed call to child psychologist to try to get an idea what the results are. I talked to a friend whom use to teach special education and is helping me understand some of this.
My oldest son struggled but he just had to practice more, do more and he would get it. That's not the case for Deja and 1st grade is proving to be a nightmare for us. I just need to vent. her dad is checking on us privately testing her. Personally I think its possible she is dyslexic. OH pain and frustration lovely combination this lovely night!
