muscle biopsy consult

Nothing like getting mixed messages from a doctor to make you feel like your doing the right thing.  Today I saw the surgeon for my muscle biopsy consult.   He was asking me about my condition etc...when I asked him how being on a seroid could affect the results of a muscle biopsy.   He said it can definitely affect the results and asked why my rheumy wanted one when i had been on steroids for going on 3 weeks now.  i said i guessed i really didnt know.  he just said he wanted one.   what the rheumy said was that it may come back inconclusive and if it does, it isnt going to change his diagnosis but that MAYBE it would give him some information.   The surgeon said yes thats true but if it isnt going to change my treatment plan one way or the other sometimes you have to wonder why your putting yourself thru the time, pain, and expense.   My step-mom who was with me said "it sounds to me like you are saying she shouldnt have this done".  To which he said, "Oh no...I'm not saying that.  I do what the doctor tells me to do.  I just wonder why they do them if they wont affect their treatment plans one way or the other sometimes".   ???  I guess this is just one of hose things that I wont know if it was beneficial or not until AFTER its done.   I guess it may be inconclusive but maybe not.  And if not and it does give him more info it will be worth it.  I'm having it done in my left tricep.  Local anesthetic and sedation.   He said they can make me as sleepy as I want to be and most people do very well with the sedation and a lot of them dont even remember the procedure.  He said it will be sore for a couple of weeks.  Great!   More pain!  The surgery scheduler s calling me today or tomorrow with a day and time but he said it will likely be this week still.

My Neurologist saw no reason to do a muscle biopsy due to the inconclusive nature of the findings. That is the only advice I can give to you. hugs your way.

Well, I guess it\'s good that you got some answers regarding when and where, but I can see the frustration with the why. If it won\'t change your diagnosis or treatment I do wonder why it\'s necessary. At least you are getting sedated, put that on your gratitude list. Maybe it will help with ruling out other possibilities. Just remember you have a friend who had it not sedated and I am fine, so you will be fine too. I had it on my left bicep. I made my own sling the day after because I felt so fragile I didn\'t want to even accidently bump it. I put ice on it and that really helped the pain and discomfort. Love and Light.... Maruska

Thanks Maruska....I cant IMAGINE getting this done without sedation! Dope me up!!! :) My step mom had mentioned that maybe I should put my arm in a sling after to help keep it in place. Especially when I\'m out in public. I think people tend to give you more room if they can actually SEE you have a problem. You know, because we \"dont look sick\". ;)

my first rheumy had me on 60 mg of Prednisone for 2 weeks before I saw my other one that felt it was completely not necessary due to the fact the Prednisone would have given a false response. Blessings, Kim

Ugh....I\'m really just not sure what the heck to do here!!!! Part of me says to just do it because maybe they will get some useful information out of it and we wont know if we dont try but then another part of me (the part that doesnt like pain) says I should call the rheum\'s nurse and at least tell her what the surgeon said and see what the rheum\'s response is to that.
