MOVIE: from homeless to harvard, by liz murray//dinner at k's//what state do u really belong in?
this is turning into a tragic week - Shirley Temple (Black) died. i put an obit on my 79lbs avatar. she is the highest paid child star to date and at the time of her fame, was making more money than Clark Gable. (quite an accomplishment for a 3 year old. wow! seriously). They claim she lost her spark as a teen and just became an ordinary teen and as an adult was a united states diplomat.
saw the movie from Homeless to Harvard about Liz Murray who graduated from harvard in 2009. its a true story and totally amazing, makes anything the rest of us go through seem like totally NOTHING compared to her. wow! one of her best quotes is:
"I'm smart. I know I can succeed. I just need a chance. A chance to climb out of this place I've been born in. Everyone I know is angry and tired. They're trying to survive. But I know that there is a world out there that is better, that's better developed. And I want to live in it." Liz Murray
she says something else when she is applying for a new york times scholarship to pay for harvard and being interviewed by their board of directors, about people going to college to learn the little pieces, but she already knows the little pieces, she's already seen the inside of people - other people would never know, she needs to learn the other pieces that everyone else learns who are in stable environments. she doesn't say it exactly like that, i'll have to watch the movie again and write it down. she's really good though and she makes you THINK. i was so amazed by the whole thing.
the girl grew up in nyc and i'm thinking the whole time, where is social service. she grew up in the 90's, why didn't social service come in and get her and others like her OUT of there. how many kids are there out there growing up living on the street and eating from dumpsters and sleeping in subways to stay warm? wth?
its raining a lot today. i'm car shopping. i test drove a few. i liked the yaris and the camry. everyone hates the yaris but for me its a perfect fit. i like the seats. i wanted to test drive mazdas today, instead we did a rescue of a cat that is on a hunger strike. also the woman i'm babysitting a rabbit for, called back last week, but was a no show yesterday and a no call. grrrrr. i'm allergic to rabbits, even though they are my favorite animal, otherwise i wouldn't care at all.
had dinner at k's, which is where i saw the movie about liz murray. we had salmon and veggies and peach smoothies with gin and got buzzed. those smoothies are so good. its still raining here.
