Mixed Feelings

Howdy!

So yesterday was my husband and I's second anniversary. We had made all kinds of plans and whatnot to be together and no one else that day however life never works out the way you try.

My doctor scheduled a visit for 930 am in a city that is a 2 hour drive from where we live. It was to see an OB/GYN for a follow up ultrasound for an ovarian cyst I got in February. I have not had any problems with my cyst since then, so I was more than a little annoyed that they kept sending me back for more. It was a cyst about the size of a baseball, so not a healthy cyst, but not one that was causing me any problems after it ruptured. However like a good little follower I went to the appointments.

I have recently learned what a transvaginal ultrasound is, and I felt extremely violated by the whole thing. Personally I think it is overly invasive and there are better ways of scanning my abdomen area than sticking a wand as deep as you can inside of me.

So I went to this new appointment, and when we got their they had no idea what I was there for. Bloody hell! So I did their weight in so they could tell me that I am 32.6% BMI thus making me obese (and I should try to lose weight) and then did medical history.

First of all there are three things I cannot stand when they take medical history

Q: Do you drink?
A: Every so often I guess.
Q: So you are a drinker, how often do you drink?
A: I have a wine cooler maybe every few months of so.
Q: Do you feel the need to drink?
A: No
Q: So when you drink how many drinks do you have at once?
A: Maybe half the bottle, I'm not a big drinker.
Q: So would you say that you drink several at once or a week?
A: No

REPORT: patient admits to drinking
Seriously what the hell! So then the doctor asks me if I need counseling for my drinking problem.

Q: Do you smoke?
A: No
Q: Have you ever smoked?
A: I did a long time ago
Q: Did you smoke a pack a day, several packs a day, several packs a week?
A: Maybe one cigarette every couple of days
Q: Do you still smoke?
A: No
Q: Do you feel the need to smoke every day?
A: No
Q: When did you last smoke?
A: I don't know years ago
Q: So one year?
A: More than that
Q: Did you smoke a lot?
A: No

REPORT: Patient has/is smoker

Again! Seriously! And then the doctors wants to know if i would like to do a quit smoking program.

Q: How many pregnancies, including abortions and miscarriages have you had?
A: None
Q: Are you sure?
A: Yes
Q: Have you ever suspected you were pregnant?
A: No
Q: Are you pregnant now?
A: No

REPORT: Abortions - no answer given
        Miscarriages - no answer given
Patient doesn't believe herself to be pregnant

After reading this third one, the doctor would like to know how I would know for sure I wasn't pregnant. I was like, maybe the fact I had a normal, regular period last week? Or that I am in a monogamous relationship and on birth control? What more do you want???

The doctor proceeded to lecture me about how since my mom has had both breast and ovarian cancer, I need to have the BRCA testing done, and how cysts may be a sign of cancer and that I may or may not already have cancer. Also that I should wait until all the testing and more ultrasounds and genetic counseling is finished before we have children, just to make sure that if I at some point may or may not develop cancer I can remove my breasts and ovaries to prevent that like happening because all women should follow Angelina Jolie's example and do it before the possibility arises.

I got further lectured on how since my mom had cancer, I WILL HAVE TO GET cancer and that is why I need the testing. She also want's us to wait.

Husband and I talked it over, and we are sick to death of everyone who thinks they know better, telling us to wait. I am getting to damn old to keep waiting. I don't want to be having my first child at 40, I don't want to be having my first child at 35 or 30, I sure as hell don't want to wait until I am closer to 50 either. So we aren't waiting for the doctors to line up their ducks. Once I complete what I want for my body, which is to be off the medication completely and be stable, we are trying for children, doctor blessing or no.

I get regular screening for cancer, and I am not going to sit around for the rest of my life WAITING for something before I start living my life.

We got there at 9 am, we were sent to the lab for blood work at 11 am. After an hour of waiting for the 4 people in front of me to either get their blood drawn or to pee in a cup, it was after noon and we were hungry and agitated.

However we spent the rest of the day doing what we wanted to do. Went shopping for silly things, went to lunch, went to a gun shop, went to dinner and came home.
