Missing my shadow

Today is a exceptionally hard day for me, we had to put my dog to sleep. Shadow would have been 18 years old in June, I've had him since he was just a puppy. Shadow was the runt oh his litter but he was the best dog of all. My brother owned his mother and all my sister's took one of her pup's, Shadow was the last one to be picked and turned out to be the best dog of all. He was the only dog left, all his brother's and sister's died years ago. He was the gentlest, most loving dog I've ever owned, my grandchildren loved him so much, the girl's are in school, I don't know how we are going to tell them when they come home, he's been with them since they were born. I feel sick inside, I haven't told my husband yet either, he is going to be heartbroken. I used to put the phone to Shadow's ear so my husband could talk to him and his tail would start wagging, he knew his voice. That's it for me no more pets, I'm sick  of all the people in my life leaving me, I know he was just a dog but he was my baby!

I am so sorry. I had to do that before, it\'s awful. Like losing a part of your family. It was a part of your family.

I had a Shadow too. She was black lab/german shepherd, but looked black lab. She didn\'t die. I couldn\'t keep her. She had health problems, I was broke, and then where I moved, I couldn\'t have her there. I was so heartsick that I had to give her up. She went to a good home, with 5 girls and 3 adults and another dog. She went to a resort 2 weeks after she went to live there.

I remember putting my other dogs to sleep. You cry as if you lost a kid. I hated coming home and not hearing her tags jingling from her collar coming to greet me.

I do not have any pets now. I am not sure I will again, either. Kinda got used to not having one to worry who would babysit her if I went out of town, but lots of times I wish I had one while my fiance has been gone.

What kind of dog was Shadow???

I am sorry for your loss.

He was such a good dog, he was good with all the kids he used to let them ride his back when he was younger. We have lot\'s of good memories and will miss him so much. It is like loosing a part of my family, it does totally suck!!

I know it does. I bet he looked kind of like mine. I couldn\'t figure out what to name her when I got her. She followed me all over the place, so my neighbor said, She is your Shadow. It stuck. I hope the new people kept her name.

I feel sad for you, wish it didn\'t make you feel so bad. It will take time, as everything else does. HUGS

Thanks, my son decided to have him cremated so at least we can bury his ashes., We knew as soon as we saw our shadow that that would be his name because he was all black and followed us around like a shadow. I\'m sure in time I\'ll feel better but your right for now I just feel sad.

I\'m sorry Pat, Shadow sounds a lot like my dog Chelsea, she is a lab/chow mix and all black. She followed me at a job 13 yrs ago, all day long for two days. She was just a black fluffy ball of fluff, and so cute. I didn\'t want her because I had just lost my great dane. I guess it was meant to be because she was so hungry, I couldn\'t bear to leave her there. So I guess she chose me! My heart breaks for you, and I know the time isn\'t far off for me having to do that, she is 13 yrs old now..Hugs to you!
