Miss Us

A residual aneurysm from my own prepubescent lessons of the English language was triggered countless times during the years I taught English as a Second Language to more recent immigrants. Whatever their first language, the question was remarkably consistent. "How say this?" they would ask in raw beginner English while pointing to the written letters, "Mrs." From all the originating phonetics, the first guess was also remarkably consistent. "Mirs?" For one of my bolder and more advanced students, I explained the etymology. He was not advanced enough to know better than to go to work and call the boss's wife, "Mistress." Native English speakers need no elaboration on how that worked out. I never committed that logic again. The lesson remains, "Write this, say that and NEVER question."
My son is moving out today and taking his new Mrs with him.
Wish I knew what to say and how to act. 
Somehow it doesn't seem right to just be glad it is over.
