Microplastics

Most products containing microbeads are likely to be imported from overseas, they could also be listed under the Customs Regulations 1956. These regulations prohibit the importation of a wide range of goods and chemicals into Australia, but would not prevent Australian manufacture of products containing microbeads. We acknowledge that the name of our organisation includes the name of the Aboriginal tool, the BOOMERANG, adopted for the symbolism of returning to the user.
One study estimated that approximately 90 plastic particles are ingested from an average 250g serving of mussels and 50 particles from an average serving of six oysters. The number of particles will 微整 墨尔本 be affected by the concentration of microplastics present in the marine area. It is possible that ingested plastic particles may move from the gastrointestinal tract to other parts of the body.

Cleaning molluscs before eating does not remove all the particles; they can remain in the tissue, circulatory system and/or digestive tract. Greg Hunt has proposed using Australia’s product stewardship legislation to ban microbeads. The Product Stewardship Act aims to reduce the environmental and health impacts of products throughout their lifecycle.
"Our findings shed light on the urgent need to prevent microplastic pollution by working with the communities, industries and government to protect these fragile marine systems." In light of this information, our current view is that plastic contamination of the food chain is unlikely to result in immediate health risks to consumers. This view is supported by EFSA, which considers that while further work is required, it seems unlikely microplastics are harmful to consumers. Absorption of intact plastic particles from the gut is likely to be very limited (≤0.3 %). In addition, because of the small mass of plastic consumed it is expected that there is unlikely to be significant increases in exposures to environmental chemicals such as PCBs, PAHs or bisphenol A that may adsorb to the plastic surface.

Microplastic levels were four times higher at Semaphore Beach compared to more remote Ceduna on Eyre Peninsula. Instead, it 'breaks up' into smaller and smaller particles eventually becoming microplastics. Recently, there's been increasing interest in the effects of microplastics pollution. Media reports have examined microplastics pollution, especially in the marine environment, and possible contamination of the food supply. When a plastic bottle enters the ocean it slowly breaks down into small pieces over hundreds of years.

This project will provide guidance for national policy and action to reduce the release and impacts of microplastics on our environment and oceans. A literature review will identify key marine microplastics research and policy development internationally, with a focus on research that is contextual to microplastics in the Australian marine environment. Microplastics are generally considered to be small plastic particles less than about 5mm in size.
Microplastics are eaten by fish, seabirds and other marine life, who mistake these for food. Once eaten by aquatic animals, they can potentially become part of the human food chain. Even as early as the 1970s, before global plastic production increased dramatically, a study found over half the fish species examined for plastic ingestion contained polystyrene particles. In some species, up to one third of the individuals sampled had ingested plastic. Recently, plastic has been found in fish and molluscs sold for human consumption. For example, a sample of fish bought at an Indonesian market showed that 55% of species and 28% of individuals had plastic in their gastrointestinal tract.

While larger plastics often float on the ocean, concentrating in the centre of gyres and shallow ocean sediment, microplastics settle in greater concentrations on deep ocean sediment. This means microplastics may affect deep sea organisms as well as marine life in shallower waters. The prevalence of microplastic being ingested by our sea life is a major concern which has rapidly become one of the major threats to marine biodiversity. Not only does this plastic cause starvation and poison species with the chemicals contained within the plastic itself, but microplastics are also known to be a toxic sponge sucking up any dangerous chemicals found in the surrounding ocean. A 2001 study by Japanese researchers found that plastic production pellets collected from coastal Japanese waters had accumulated toxins at concentrations up to a million times that found in the surrounding seawater.
As ingested plastic can build up in the stomach, the amount of food that an individual can eat and absorb is limited, reducing fitness. It can also cause internal injury and death through intestinal tract blockage in many species. Species higher up the food chain can also ingest plastic by eating individuals who have accumulated plastic. Primary microplastics whichare tiny pieces of manufactured plastic like microbeads for use in facial cleansers, cosmetics, toothpaste, detergents and polishes and to some degree in medicine as vectors for drugs. They also include ‘nurdles’ the small plastic resin balls that are used to make all plastic products.

Fish can also bioaccumulate toxins from plastics, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PCBs and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. These endocrine-disrupting toxins can change hormone levels, increase rates of some diseases, and cause reproductive problems and death. Plastic litter can enter our seas and oceans, where it never completely breaks down.
