In reality there are no wine from the Domaine which is harvested on more than 1 ha of Vineyard, and therefore the quantities of all wines are quite limited. The prices are largely outside of the control of JFC, his ex-cellar prices are not so high – at least if there was some wine left to sell! – but the middlemen continue to make hay while the sun shines.
A 1992 Coche Meursault Chevalieres village and a Ramonet Chassagne Morgeot 1993 were together in a flight with a completely forgettable Prosper Maufoux Batard-Montrachet as the third wheel. The 2015 Meursault Village is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, Anjou pear, white flowers, honeycomb and hazelnut cream. The Comtes Lafon domaine, based in particularly extensive cellars attached to one of the village’s grandest houses, was built up astutely a century and more ago. It boasts well over three hectares of premier cru vineyard as well a precious slice of white burgundy’s crème de le crème grand cru Le Montrachet. Return to form and though young, very well integrated and quite giving already on both the nose and the palate. Just lacking that matchstick and gunflint reductivity that you get with older Coche... I guess under Raphael's stewardship these wines are more approachable when young but are losing a hint of that ' je ne sais quoi' with some older vintages. This can definitely age though, and will be very good for a long time. Jean-François Coche (and since 1999 his son Raphaël) produces wines that you are often mandated to drink – but all too often for the wrong reason!
In Denmark the generic Meursault comes from the plot Les Narvaux and this should be one of the heavier and fatter of his village wines – according to the importer. This cuvee should also be the one supplied to American importer. The yields are low, partly from a high vine age, partly from planting density and particularly from short pruning – “green harvesting is already too late” – though he will still use itin extremisas in 2004. If JFC’s wines are famous for one thing it is the oak treatment – some love, some hate.
The 2010 vintage from Coche-Dury stands out as a particularly exceptional year, highly acclaimed for its remarkable balance and depth.
