The idea behind marriage being formalized (the \"piece of paper\" that women are said to require and men hate), was not for the benefit of the man or the woman. It was an institution mandated by society for the benefit of the children which sex will produce. It hasn\'t exactly been a roaring success, has it???
i agree.
there\'s also TONS of information on matrilinear societies from BEFORE the time of our bible, where marriage did not exist at all. women produced babies and RAN the civlization. babies only knew their mother\'s and the fathers were merely workers. all women had multiple partners and so did the men and it was considered normal - a set up more like a queen bee and worker bees. there are mentions of it throughout genesis, but all history was passed down in secret and usa doesn\'t like people to know about the huge religions (religion used to run countries right next to the king, queen, emperor) and civilizations run by women. (i was a religion major at a secular universtiy). the book women and religion by Ferguson gets into it, and is simple to read with photos of the historical records and the more popular \"when god was a woman\" as in when god or the all powerful force was believed to be female. when you take that class and the class on hellinism (around 600 a.d.), which is when they converted pagans and jews to christianity and HOW they went about this, EVERYTHING in the western hemisphere makes sense and NONE of what they told us in elementary school is true.
even in the 1800\'s marriage was not a romance and was viewed as a practical or economic contract between two people. women who were widows with kids were considered a good catch, because there were more people to maintain the farm or business kind of thing. different world.
p.s. matrilinear and matriarchies existed for 10,000 years before the current patriarchy which is only 3000 years old, and already seems to be waning. there are women presidents all over the world - about time it swung back.
