"Study the past, if you would divine the future." ~Confucius
Retrospection seems to be the theme of my life lately.  What I wanted to share today is how my wife and I met and eventually began dating.  I have mentioned elsewhere that we began dating in 2002 and married in 2004, but the beginning goes back a bit further.
A few months after I turned 16 my cousin held a shared birthday for himself and a friend of his that happened to have the same birthday.  When she first walked in, I took an instant liking to her.  She was beautiful.  And I don't mean in the 'hey that is a hot girl over there at the bar' kind of way.  I mean in the 'she is literally the girl of my dreams' kind of way.
Apparently we flirted throughout the event, though with my social awkwardness I did not realize she had flirted with me.  Over the next couple of years I talked to my cousin about her and asked about whether she was single and how she was doing.  He always replied that she was not interested in me but I continued on.  Years later I would find out she asked about me through him as well.  I can't blame him, I wouldn't have wanted someone trying to take a girl I liked away from me (even if we weren't dating).
After graduating I went off to college.  There I met and began dating in what I consider my first real relationship (I don't count random dating as a relationship).  She was, to be frank, as close as I could find to that girl I had met a few years earlier at a party.  Things went OK for a while, we met each other's parents and went on a lot of dates.  This is where my own troubles began.
I had been suffering from Clinical Depression for years but leaving for college made it much worse.  So I eventually came home and began taking a host of medications.  This put a strain on our relationship and eventually broke it.  Luckily around this same time I got back in contact with that same girl from the birthday party.  She confessed having the same feelings for me that I had for her.
Our first date was one of a kind.  For the first time in my life I felt like I was where I was meant to be.  We went to see a movie.  I don't remember the movie, I just remember sitting and talking to her through the entire showing, we were alone.  We discussed everything from how we see dating to kids and family.  We couldn't have been on a more similar wavelength if we tried.  The end of the date was a simple hug and a promise to see each other again.  Two years later we would be married.
