medication

J saw his counselor yesterday and told me after his appointment ~ his ex-girlfriend was in on the session.  He said that she had suggested it before but he wasn't interested.  I am guessing that he finally realized that they aren't going to get back together and all the phone calling and pleading in the world wasn't going to change anything.  In fact, he told me that his counselor suggested that if he should call her ~ she is to call us.  He has a very persistent personality and always had a hard time letting go of things.  He's very determined when he wants something and that's a bad combo when you have a chemical imbalance.  Maybe it's the imbalance that makes him this way ~ who knows?  All I know is that I'm relieved that he can share with me.  He also told me that his counselor suggested that he go to AA.  I hope he does.  He went before a few times and said he doesn't like it - too depressing.  How ironic is that?
Anyway - I guess he's going to try meds.  I hope the doctor prescribes Wellbutrin.  It will help with his smoking....

A lot of times when someone is new to AA, people in the meeting share their \"what it was like\" stories and usually add what it is like now. They do that so the newcomer may find something to identify with. But of course, depending on the newcomer\'s frame of mind, it can also drive them off.
That may have been what happened to make your son think it was depressing. If he\'s gone more than 3 times he no longer is asked to identify himself as a newcomer and he may hear different viewpoints if he gives it another try. I don\'t know if you can explain that to him in a way he can hear, but it might be worth a shot.
He is obviously working on himself, and I hope he doesn\'t give up reaching out for help and holding onto hope.
Interesting how two sons from the same family can be so different. Mine are like that too. The older one parties at times but hasn\'t gotten addicted, thank God, and holds down a good job and is a loving person. The younger one is the messed-up one, and they\'re only 17 months apart.
I was just with some AlAnon friends tonight; I feel good with my recovering friends and we don\'t just talk about recovery, of course. I do hope you have someone who helps you that you can be close with....carrying all this alone can be very wearing....sharing the burden lightens it, and laughing with someone is very healing.
At any rate, sending Daily Strength waves out to you!
