May 17, 2010 - Work dynamics

Went back to work today.  Not much going on, just the usual things.  Sonja called in today.  I am really concerned that she is taking too much time since she is a newer employee.  I know she is done with probation but why take so much time within the 1st 6 months.  When I started with the department (I was a transfer), I hardly used any of my time but wound up having over 100 hours at the end of the year.  Maybe I was too afraid to use my time.  I would have used it for a weeks vacation.  I talked to Arlene about it and she said not to worry, Rosanna would deal with it and talk to her.
Arlene is a sweetheart.  I can talk to her about anything.  She was on vacation the week before me in florida.  she had a great time too.  we haven't seen eachother in 2 1/2 weeks.
I am having kinda second thoughts about my job in general.  I have been with the department for 5 years.  Everyone is really nice but seems like the dynamics have changed in the past few months.  How?  Seems like our managers, Diane and Rosanna are more strict with our time.  we have to eat lunch at different times.  We use to eat lunch together as a department.  Our department isn't like any hospital unit, we are nursing education.  They are so afraid that the phone calls would not be taken at an appropriately.  They are so concerned that Arlene's phone isn't being answered at all times.  We were not like that before this.  One day, about 6 months ago - there was an afternoon CNO meeting and one of the CNO's complained that we ate lunch together.  Jeez....you would want us to be a close knit department and not hate eachother.  I just think they are jelous that they don't have something like that.  I sat at Arlene's phone for 30 minutes and her phone rang -- once!  It wasn't even her phone call.  I will be reevaluating my job situation this coming year.  I have been with my hospital system for 18 years,  Thats a long time.  I do job changes every 6 years.  I will be evaluating everyone (managers and educators) and my job duties this year.  If I feel the slightest uncomfortableness, I will be bidding on other jobs within my hospital system.
My good friend Debbie (she is the one who I went to lunch with saturday after I got home) who is a nurse educator at one of our nursing schools got fired from my hospital system by my bosses boss, Diane.  It was mostly a she said this and she said that business - the nurse claimed that Debbie Swore at her.  I highly doubt that happened and Diane would not hear of it.  I thought that Diane would be someone who would listen to both sides - apparently not.  The college seems to think she got set up, I kinda believe that.   I kinda of feel for my good friend.  She is a mental health nurse by trade and she will be trying to get a job at a mental health hospital.  She said by the 1st of the year she will be selling her house and moving to Florida.  I really don't blame her.  I do hope the mental hospital job works out.  Even though there are a ton of Nursing jobs out there, there really isn't!  At least not right now.  There are out of work nurses out there.  Our hospital system is only taking the best nursing students and experienced nurses right now (I work down the hall from the nurse recruiter and we talk about it all the time).
Anyways - thanks for letting me vent.  I actually feel better after writing this.  Kinda cleared the air with my job situation.  My job dynamics are not bad at this time but I really have to keep my p's and q's within the department.  Diane and Rosanna are not what they seem to be - I shared this with Arlene and no one else (except you guys).  I keep thinking,  they couldn't handle doing the school internships and contracts if I left.  we will see what May 2010-May 2011 will bring.  1 year....I am hopeful it will improve some, I will keep positive thoughts. I will keep writing about it from time to time as things progress this year.  I will journal it.
