March 25, 2011 - 1st outing for 5K training run
Good morning everyone,
Wanted to get this out of the way before I start some real work. LOL!!
Brrrr....it sure was cold! Got there at 5:45pm. Parked on the street. The meetup was in a location away from the main drag of the Cancer institute. They even had a table with a flag that said "no boundaries". Lots of people were there. Including a few nurse managers who I either talked on the phone or emailed for something. Most of the people who came were from our Children's Hospital location. Myself and about 3 other ED people from my hospital site came but they stayed amongst themselves. Whatever - I like to talk to people (why wasn't I like that in 7th grade while rollerscating!). We checked ourselves in. alice was our leader for the evening and stayed back with our coats and keys. Weather? The sun was shinning and the now was melting but alittle bit on the streets (Virginia Street had lots of snow - we tregged on!). Anyways, there was only a few people who actually was able to run the whole mile an the rest of us (probably 20 people) stayed with the walk/run group. I started out really strong, out front with another girl from Children's. They mapped out a street with alittle hill (the same hill going up to the buffalo general hospital). I completely lost it there. I didn't have any more energy. Wound up walking after I got up the hill. The last 20 ft we ran downhill. Iwas in the back but immediately picked up speed and ran past about 15 people. I tell you, although the eliptical and treadmill walking has greatly improved my endurance and woke up my body - I need to do at least a minute or two of running on the treadmill at the gym. My body can't wake up the running endurance to keep up with the group at the end. I may have to refigure my treadmill work to correspond to my training with the group. According to their schedule on their calandar, I do need to get out there and walk/run twice a week (which Ican do that at the gym on the treadmill for the next month) and a 45 minute sunday walk.
The guy who was at the front with us was funny. He reminded us "ok 30 seconds" He had a bell to tell us when to run and when to walk. Quite interesting how its all laid out.
The leaders with us mentioned that our group "Kaleida Health" stayed together and finished our mile in 16 minutes. Not too bad. He said normally people are spread out throughout the whole mile. Thats good for safety. We stayed within the compounds of the 2 hospitals.
On to next week. I do have to get to the gym tomorrow (sat) and do some eliptical and treadmill (this time do some running for a minute/walking for 2). My goal with this is to be 1 step ahead of the group. I can't believe I let myself get like this. On top of it I am carrying about 40 lbs extra weight than when I was an actual runner (hard to believe I was a 10 minute miler, or a 31-32 minute 5K runner). Then Sunday, I will hit the park and do 2 loops of walking, which is 3.6 miles. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and won't be too bad. I will deal with the cold weather.

Whow Jen, I\'am so proud of you!! Your doing what a lot of people only wish they could do, they could but they just don\'t know it. When I was 58 I was still doing the 5K but shortly after that, my body decided to shut down and it\'s only history after that. But I didn\'t let it stop me, I still go to the gym every day that I can, snow or not. Keep up the good work honey, it\'s going to pay off. Be mindful of your body, it will tell you what you need to know. Good luck sweetie.
lots of love,
Norma..
Great Job!!
Good job!!!

Very good. You are doing great. Sounds like you are enjoying it too. Keep up the good work.
Great job Jen. I think doing some interval running/walking on the treadmill could help, but it\'s definitely no substitution for actually running outdoors. If you run on the treadmill, set the grade or incline at 1.5%. Many people do not realize that running on a flat treadmill requires less energy expenditure than running on a flat surface. Researchers found that it takes a 1.5% grade to make up the difference. When I run on the treadmill, I do so at a 2.0% grade and even this is no substitution for actually getting outdoors and running.
Anyways, just some things to consider. Big, big supportive hugs. Keep up the great work!
