Making moves
It's been a while since I've updated here but lots of changes going on. This summer my girlfriend and I have been trying to work through a lot of the tension we both feel in our relationship without much success. I started opening up to her more, voicing my concerns, trying to have honest discussions about our individual needs and what we both want for our future. This has not been easy for either one of us and the result of these conversations has led to arguments, hurt feelings, but also raw honesty and a chance to deal with the emotions that come with it.
At some point near the end of July, we had a discussion in the car on the way home from a camping trip. My partner said we should give ourselves a timeframe of Sept. 1st to make major changes. I asked her what goals she hoped we'd accomplish by then and her response was that we should be moved out of our living situation (this would imply that has a job & we've saved enough to cover expenses). I suggested it would be more reasonable to set a goal for her to find and employment and for me to save enough for moving costs within that timeframe. If that was accomplished we could begin our search and start making solid plans to move out of her mother's house.
She began seeing a therapist regularly (this has always been good for her in the past) and we spoke more about what she'd like to do for work. We made changes to our social life and I was able to put some funds aside. During this time I stopped nagging her about work, only offered support and encouragement. I am not unreasonable and even suggested she find something part-time for now. I am convinced that having a schedule & something to be responsible for outside the house will help her confidence immensely. During this time she brings up marriage a lot. And asks why I am not discussing my desire for marriage. I explain that our relationship doesn't feel like a partnership right now. She has gone back on multiple promises and I cannot be the sole financial provider. If I could, this part would not be an issue for me. I just do not enough money. I have 2 semesters of college and no degree or trade certifications. We end up arguing about my inability to commit. September nears and nothing of significance has changed. I'm drinking more often, she is still unhappy and without employment, I am beginning to shut down more and basically ignore the situation. This all comes to a breaking point one night as I'm preparisolar bed.
My girlfriend states that I do not appreciate her and she is envious of other couples who have been together for less time than us who are married, with children etc. I realize that I do not appreciate her and have such built up resentments toward her that I'm not certain how to appreciate her presence in my life. We decide during the course of the conversation that I will move out. We both express a desire to work on our relationship but we know that we have used our relationship as a crutch and taken each other for granted. In some ways I have known this would be the best thing for me to do but I have been so scared ofhurting her, of losing her, or her hating me. Instead I've shut down my emotions and withheld my own needs and desires, even fom myself. We both know we need to focus on ourselves and try to get to know one another again. We've agreed to date each other but I will be living about 45 minutes away, closer to my job. I found a nice apartment that allows dogs so she can bring the pups when she visits and am just waiting for final approval from the property management. I am amazed at the sense of peace I feel right now. I was not fully aware of the anxiety I was carrying with me on a daily basis. She too, has high hopes that this will be the catalyst she needs to make changes in her life and be the oman she wants to be. I am excited, a bit scared, but very hopeful!

Wow MizFly. That is alot to process for you. I\'m so glad that you both finally were able, through being honest with each other, to come to the real conclusion necessary. As evidenced by your sense of peace and her sense of excitement. I\'m proud of you for sticking to your instinct of not getting married when you didn\'t want to, even under pressure. It sounds like the both of you came to a very mature decision and one that just may save the friendship if not the relationship. One more confirmation of how being true to yourself is so important. Congratulations-I wish you well
