Making Healthy School Lunch Choices

I now have three kids who want a lunch at school everyday. With morning being the customary train wreck until everyone gets outside the door, I rejoice when the kids opt for a school"hot lunch" since it means less work, confusion, and commotion in the morning. "Sexy lunch" - it sounds healthy, but when I started digging into the menus it isn't quite as wholesome as it seems. In fact they tend to be high in fat, calories, and not particularly healthy.

Just about ice packs would ever envision making is fitter than the average school lunch! Nonetheless, the children love"deep fried cheese sticks" and breaded and fried then rewarmed balls of poultry such as substance, so I allow them to have the occasional school lunch. However, at least a few days a week, people opt for a much healthier choice and earn lunch at home. We attempt to incorporate a main route like a soup or sandwich, a bite like crackers or pretzels, and hopefully at least one serving of fruits or vegetables.

My 2nd and 4th graders can even make lunch , even though they need some oversight. I've learned pretty quickly that they need to enjoy the lunch that they package or it is going to come home mainly uneaten, possibly complemented by less healthy snack machine or other choices.

It's more work, but when we pack a lunch that they eat healthy and often happier as they get to select what they bring for lunch, with just a little parental supervision of course.
