Arch Rock

One of the most visited and photographed attractions on Mackinac Island is the iconic Arch Rock. This natural limestone arch is a geological marvel that took thousands of years for wind, water and receding glaciers to create. The formation is 146 feet above Lake Huron and offers sweeping views of the lake and Canada.

It’s one of a number of limestone/breccia formations on the island, including Sugar Loaf and Skull Cave. In Anishinaabe-Ojibwa tradition, the Great Creator blew the breath of life into the earth and created these geological marvels.

The rock itself is a natural limestone and breccia formation, albeit a rather uncommon type for the Great Lakes. The formation reaches a height of 146 feet and was formed in the Nipissing post-glacial period, a time when Lake Huron was much higher than it is today.

Unlike the more common granite formations found around the region, the breccia limestone used to create Arch Rock is a unique combination of mineral elements. This is a rare find and is one of the reasons early island residents lobbied for it to become a national park in 1875.

The Arch Rock is not only a landmark in its own right, it’s also one of the most fun things to see on the island. A 207-step stair trail leads to the formation, but climbing on it is strictly prohibited for everyone’s safety and structural integrity. Thankfully, there’s an easier and more impressive way to get a close-up view of the rock: a viewing platform. Hopefully this new addition to the Mackinac Island experience will draw more visitors than it currently does. Let us know if you tried it out!
Lilac Festival

The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival is a popular annual event that takes place each year on this one of a kind Michigan island. During the 10-day celebration, residents and visitors take full advantage of the flowers’ unique beauty and scent.

The lilacs bloom throughout the city’s flower-filled streets and on the shoreline of Lake Huron. They are the perfect backdrop for events, decorations and activities that span over the course of the entire festival.

A 10-day celebration of lilacs and their history to Mackinac Island, the Lilac Festival is one of the most popular and beloved events on the island. Originally started in 1949, it has grown into the first and largest summer festival on the island.

During the festival, specialists, historians, horticulturists and photographers run lectures and educational seminars on a variety of topics ranging from the history of the island to lilac care. You can even join walking tours led by lilac expert Jeff Young, who has been the horticulturist for the festival since 2010.

Each day of the 10 days of the festival brings new events and activities to the area. Some of the more popular include concerts, culinary events, horse-drawn carriage rides, the Taste of Mackinac and the Lilac Festival Grand Parade.

For those who love to get outside, the festival also hosts daily kite flying events that fill the skies with colorful kites. Musicians are also featured all over the city, from performances at dinner to meditative musical performances that help to calm and free your mind.

Another fun way to experience the festival is by taking a sip n’ sail boat cruise around the island. These themed sailing excursions allow you to take in the sights of the shoreline and the beautiful flower filled city from a different perspective.

There are also plenty of other activities to enjoy during the Lilac Festival, including a dog and pony show and the Lilac Festival 10K. In addition to these, the prestigious Taste of Mackinac culinary event is also held during this time.

The Lilac Festival is a truly wonderful and iconic event on this unique Michigan island vacation destination, so if you are looking to experience this amazing 10-day celebration, be sure to book your trip well in advance. You will be glad you did!
